For fans of Hulu’s hit legal drama Reasonable Doubt, Season 3 ended with a shocking cliffhanger that left Jax Stewart’s fate hanging in the balance. Now, the series is returning for Season 4 on October 6, and a newly released trailer raises the stakes even higher.
Created by showrunner Raamla Mohamed Hunter, Reasonable Doubt debuted in 2022 with Kerry Washington serving as an executive producer. Since its debut, the Onyx Collective series has built a dedicated fan base around Jax (Emayatzy Corinealdi), a high-powered Los Angeles attorney whose personal and professional lives continue to collide in unexpected ways.
The Season 4 trailer, released by Hulu today, reveals that Jax has been shot, leaving fans with one major question: Is she still alive? Season 4 picks up after the explosive events of Season 3, which saw a brutal attack leave Jax’s family and the newly established firm shaken. The previous season also tackled difficult storylines involving child actor abuse, racial microaggressions in the workplace, and abuse of power.
The new season will introduce R&B singer, actor, and podcaster Durrell “Tank” Babbs to the cast as Eric Cropper, The Stewart Firm’s newest client. Morris Chestnut, Joseph Sikora, and Brandee Evans will also return as recurring guest stars. The cast additionally includes La La Anthony, Taylor Polidore Williams, DeVaughn Nixon, Rutina Wesley, Alexxis Lemire, and Meagan Good.
Series regulars and fan favorites McKinley Freeman, Tim Jo, and Angela Grovey are also back. Ahead of the Season 4 trailer release, I attended Hulu’s press set visit in Atlanta, Georgia, where I spoke with showrunner Mohamed Hunter about what fans can expect from the new season.
When approaching the writers’ room following such an explosive Season 3 finale, Mohamed Hunter said she began by thinking about what the series had yet to explore—and what she would want to see as a fan.
“I really think about, what is the story I want to tell. What haven’t we seen?” Mohamed Hunter said. “And so those are the questions I started asking myself, and what’s exciting.”
The showrunner explained that she approaches the series from the perspective of both its creator and a viewer. “I do approach it as a fan,” she said. “What do I want to see? What kind of storylines do I want to bring forth?”
While Reasonable Doubt is known for its dramatic twists, Mohamed Hunter emphasized that the series remains grounded in the realities of its characters and the experiences at the center of the show.
“I always make sure the show stays grounded, even if it’s how you can do those crazy twists in the series,” she said. “But at the core of the show, we’re really dealing in the nuance of various life-altering situations while being Black.”
And if the Season 4 trailer is any indication, fans should prepare for plenty of surprises.
“I think just shock and awe,” Mohamed Hunter teased. “I think it’s not going go the way that you might think it will go. And then once you think you understand which way the series will turn, it’ll go in a different way.”
Even the cast, she revealed, has been caught off guard by the season’s twists over the years. “The actors receive the scripts and read them and are like, ‘whoa’,” she said. “Their minds are being blown every episode that comes out.”
With Jax’s fate still uncertain and The Stewart Firm facing new challenges, Season 4 promises to keep viewers guessing about what comes next.
