While everyone is currently cheering on Obsession or watching Toy Story 5 and Minions and Monsters rack up big numbers, there is one film breaking out in a different way.

As it stands, A24’s The Invite has a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes from a whopping 143 critics, a very difficult average to maintain with that many reviews in. It’s being called one of the best movies of the year, and mathematically, that is true.

Among the year’s highest-profile movies with the most reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, The Invite is near the top. Here are the main entries.

  • Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma – 100% critic score
  • Is God Is – 97% critic score
  • The Invite – 95% critic score
  • The Sheep Detectives – 95% critic score
  • Project Hail Mary – 94% critic score
  • Obsession – 94% critic score
  • Hoppers – 94% critic score
  • Sent Help – 92% critic score
  • Toy Story 5 – 92% critic score
  • 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple – 91% critic score
  • I Love Boosters – 91% critic score

There may be a festival favorite or documentary or three missing in there, but you get the idea. The Invite boasts four different big names: Ed Norton, Penelope Cruz, Olivia Wilde and Seth Rogen. The film is directed by Olivia Wilde, whose previous film, Don’t Worry Darling, in which she also starred, was the subject of much controversy and far from well-received (a 38% Rotten Tomatoes score). The Invite is a total turnaround with its 95%, and it also currently has a 93% Rotten Tomatoes audience score too, so it’s not only critics that are loving it.

The Invite will be wide-released this weekend on June 10, similar to what’s going to happen with that 100% scored Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, which will go wide in August. What’s The Invite about anyway?

“Joe and Angela’s marriage is on thin ice. When they invite their enigmatic upstairs neighbors for a dinner party, the night spirals into unexpected places. Have they reignited the spark or lit the match that burns it all down?”

The movie pairs off Norton and Cruz as a couple opposite Rogen and Wilde (Joe and Angela). It is at least somewhat hard to get a true sense of what this movie is and why it’s so good just from the trailer, but the end result is clearly fantastic. It also ranks among the highest-scored films for each of those respective actors across their careers.

We are just over halfway through the year, so we’ll keep an eye on the overall list of top-scored movies as time goes on, but clearly, The Invite is going to maintain a strong presence and could easily be remembered by voters come Oscar season.
