Likely previewing his attacks against Democrats ahead of the midterm elections, President Donald Trump on Friday attacked Democratic Socialist of America (DSA) candidates, who recently won major New York primaries, calling them “hardcore, godless communists,” and warning of a “cancer” that’s “permeating our country called communism.”

Trump called the Democratic Socialists of America “animals” during a speech at the Faith & Freedom Coalition’s 2026 policy conference, saying it’s “easy for them to get followers because they make promises that they know they can’t keep.”

Democratic Socialists scored two key wins in New York congressional primaries after they were backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a longtime member of the political party.
Trump’s comments also come after Janeese Lewis George, a DSA member, decisively won the Democratic primary for D.C. mayor earlier this month.
Trump wrapped his speech with a warning, telling attendees, “We have to stop this horrible threat of cancer that’s permeating our country called communism.”
