Episode 4 arrives on Apple TV on Tuesday, August 25 at 6 p.m. PT / 9 p.m. ET. That’s a day earlier than the “official” Apple release schedule states, but this is how Apple handles almost all of its shows in practice. What Is Ted Lasso Season 4 About?
Season 4 brings Ted Lasso back to Richmond, this time facing an entirely new challenge: coaching AFC Richmond’s fledgling women’s team. Ted must assemble a new roster of underdogs and somehow recapture the magic that transformed Richmond’s men’s team, while adjusting to major changes in his personal life after several years away.
The real question, however, is whether the show can capture the magic that made it such a sensation to begin with.

Is Ted Lasso Season 4 Worth Watching?

As with so many other once-great shows, Ted Lasso caught lightning in a bottle with its debut season, and then clearly didn’t know what to do with all that crackling energy. Season 2 was an attempt to demystify Ted, who was so unflappable and good in Season 1, he was basically an anomaly in modern television, which skews toward cynical. He was, in many respects, the Elwood P. Dowd of our time.
Season 2 tried to make him more human, give him anxiety attacks and emotional depth. I understand the impulse, but it was a mistake, robbing Ted of the one thing that made him so unique in modern programming. There were still many enjoyable aspects of Season 2, but the overarching plot of resentment with Coach Nathan (Nick Mohammed) was too bleak for a show about hope – a show about slapping a Believe sign on a locker room wall and meaning it. The earnestness and sincerity were muddied, and the show wanted to have its cake and eat it, too, but the result was a mix of cynicism and treacly optimism that felt forced instead of natural.
Seasons 2 and 3 also worked hard to make the show an ensemble affair, giving more and more screen time to the side characters and losing any discernible thread in the process. Season 4 is something of a reboot, giving Ted a brand new team and a new parade of challenges (such as team members who can get pregnant) but it’s also the lowest-scoring season with audiences (76%) and second-lowest with critics (90%). Whether it’s worth watching depends on how much you enjoy Ted Lasso and the gang, but for me this show was never really the same after Season 1.
