Zilla Fatu officially signed with WWE NXT on August 19, 2026.

AEW Dynamite has a Zilla Fatu problem.
For the uninitiated, Zilla Fatu is the son of the legendary Umaga. Descendent of the Anoa’i Dynasty. Future NXT champion and possible Bloodline member.
And now, an AEW Dynamite Killer?
Zilla Fatu’s first advertised appearance on WWE NXT happened this week amid false claims of Bloodline Fatigue, and the result was one of NXT’s best numbers of the year. WWE NXT drew 683,000 viewers with 0.14 in the 18-49 demographic. This is a surge of 16% and a whopping 56%, respectively, and NXT’s best number since NXT Homecoming last September.
AEW Dynamite Ratings Struggle During Go-Home Shows
AEW Dynamite scored one of its worst numbers of the year with 587,000 viewers and 0.10 in 18-49. These represented collapses of 11% and 29%, respectively. This is its lowest number since June 10, 2026. Dynamite is nearing its biggest show of the year, and this week’s broadcast continued a strange pattern of the show’s viewership decreasing as it gets closer to a PPV.
Dynamite’s go-home show for last month’s AEW Redemption was down 11% in total viewership (706,000) and down 20% in 18-49 (0.12) from the week prior. AEW Dynamite’s go-home show for Forbidden Door was down 7% in total viewership (616,000 viewers) and down 17% in 18-49 (0.10) from the week prior.
WWE NXT Vs. AEW Dynamite Ratings
- WWE NXT Ratings (Aug. 18, 2026) | 683,000 total viewers; 0.14 in 18-19
- AEW Dynamite Ratings (Aug. 19, 2026) | 587,000 total viewers; 0.10 in 18-49
Next week’s AEW Dynamite will be the go-home show for All In, and if there’s any good news, the number can’t very much lower than its 10-week low from this week. But given AEW’s pattern of poor Dynamite viewership the week of a pay-per-view, things hardly bode well for August 26.
Zilla Fatu made his shocking debut in NXT last week, taking out Cruz Montana and Grayson Waller. Zilla was advertised for his official contract signing this week, and this came with an extra set of eyeballs for WWE’s developmental brand amid his contract signing. NXT’s viewership has faltered since the end of the famed AfricaNXT Era that featured top Black stars in Oba Femi, Trick Williams, Carmelo Hayes, Je’Von Evans and Ricky Starks. From October 1, 2024—the dawn of NXT on CW—to January 6, 2026—when Oba Femi was called up alongside Trick Williams and Je’Von Evans—NXT was a dominant 61-6 against AEW. Since then, AEW has rallied to win most weeks against NXT, but this may not be the case moving forward with a roster that is closer to reloading than rebuilding.
NXT airs head-to-head against AEW every October dating back to 2022 when Dynamite is preempted by playoff baseball. NXT has beaten Dynamite head-to-head the last five consecutive times this has happened. With a new-look roster and AEW airing on an unfamiliar night (Tuesday), this pattern is likely to play out for a sixth straight time in October 2026.
AEW Dynamite, Tony Khan And The Overrun Problem
Tony Khan has been booking bloated Dynamites as of late with overruns of 34 minutes and 21 minutes in the past two weeks. The overrun worked to drag down the two-hour average, and has led to reports of AEW talent being frustrated with the overbooked, wrestling-heavy shows despite AEW’s entire brand being built on “Where the Best Wrestle.”
“Guys, you realize I talked to people in AEW. Nobody likes this overrun. Like, the people there are like, ‘Why is this show going so long? I left and got home and the show was still going,’” said Bryan Alvarez of Wrestling Observer Live.
AEW’s overrun is typically a negative to its ratings, but it’s not as valid as an excuse as some may think. The July 15, 2026 broadcast of AEW Dynamite featured a women’s main event that did not start until eight minutes into the overrun. Still, the trios match pitting Merceds Mone and Divine Dominion against Willow Nightingale, Maya World and Hyan powered the show to its best viewership in two years with 786,000 viewers and 0.15 in the 18-49.
Despite women never having main-evented an AEW PPV in history, it’s almost like they’re one of AEW’s biggest draws in spite of it. The last person who seems to realize this is Tony Khan, and as a result, viewership will continue to be erratic for AEW Dynamite.
