This weekend, one of the strangest pop-culture debates online revolved around whether Jim Carrey was really Jim Carrey at the César Awards, where he was honored for his contributions to the film and television industry.
On Feb. 26, the 64-year-old actor attended the 2026 César Awards in Paris, where he delivered a full speech in French while accepting the prize. After photos from the red carpet and ceremony began circulating on social media, some people questioned whether the man onstage was actually Carrey, noting significant changes in his appearance.
“You can’t convince me they didn’t clone Jim Carrey…” one user wrote on X.
“Sorry but there’s a zero percent chance this is actually Jim Carrey,” added another. “I’m not saying it’s a clone or some dumb illuminati sh*t, but for some reason he’s clearly using a body double to stand in for him.”
As the rumors grew, an old clip of Carrey from his interview with David Letterman on Late Night with David Letterman resurfaced online. In it, The Truman Show actor admitted he had used decoys to avoid paparazzi in the past.
“I’ve done this a few times now and that is to use a decoy,” Carrey said. “Using a decoy — it sounds so ridiculous but it works like a charm … a Jim Carrey double. I send him off in one direction, he sucks all the press in that direction, and I just have my day.”
The story took another crazy turn when celebrity makeup artist and drag queen Alexis Stone, known for elaborate transformations of stars like Michael Jackson, Jennifer Coolidge, and Donatella Versace, posted on Instagram, claiming to have impersonated Carrey at the awards.
On Instagram, Stone shared photos of Carrey at the event next to a picture of a prosthetic mask, teeth, and wig, with the caption, “Alexis Stone as Jim Carrey in Paris.” But unlike Stone’s other famous impersonations, there was no behind-the-scenes video to back up the claim. Comments flooded the post questioning whether the impersonation was real or AI.
Carrey has admitted to using decoys before, but sending someone else to accept a major award while his family watched would be a bit extreme. Some people online offered a simpler explanation: plastic surgery.
“This age of misinformation is crazy. That’s Jim Carrey with a lot of plastic surgery. Let’s just stop the nonsense,” wrote another X user.
So, Was Jim Carrey Actually Being Impersonated?

No, Jim Carrey was not being impersonated.
The actor’s publicist confirmed to TMZ that Carrey personally attended the César Awards and accepted his Honorary César Award. Gregory Caulier, general delegate of the César Awards, also told Variety that Carrey’s appearance was genuine and described it as “a historic moment,” calling the rumors a “non-issue.”
“Jim Carrey’s visit has been planned since this summer. From the outset, he was extremely touched by the Academy’s invitation. Eight months of ongoing, constructive discussions. He worked on his speech in French for months, asking me about the exact pronunciation of certain words,” Caulier said in a statement.
Carrey was honored at the awards show alongside his family. “He came with his partner, his daughter, his grandson, and 12 close friends and family members,” Caulier continued. “His longtime publicist accompanied him. His old friend Michel Gondry, who has made a film and two series with him, was there, and they were delighted to see each other again.”
In his speech, Carrey thanked his loved ones directly.
“Thank you to my wonderful family, my daughter Jane, and my grandson Jackson, as I love you now and forever,” the actor said in French. “Thank you to my sublime companion, Min Ah. I love you, Min Ah. And finally, thank you to the funniest man I have ever known: my father Percy Joseph Carrey, who taught me the value of love, generosity, and laughter.”
So that settles it. Carrey was just being himself, and there’s no wild conspiracy — just maybe some plastic surgery.
