Guy Ritchie’s In the Grey, an action thriller starring Henry Cavill, Jake Gyllenhaal and Eiza González, is new on digital streaming this week after flopping in theaters.
Written and directed by Ritchie, In the Grey follows Rachel (González), a brilliant lawyer and high-stakes negotiator who is tasked by a wealthy client, Bobby (Rosamund Pike), to recover $1 billion stolen from her company by Manny (Carlos Bardem), a ruthless criminal tycoon.
To complete the task, Rachel needs to bring in a pair of expert extractors, Sid (Cavill) and Bronco (Gyllenhaal), and their team of covert operatives because Manny lives on an island guarded by a private army whose members are locked and loaded with high-tech weaponry.
Rated R, In the Grey also stars Kristofer Hivju, Emmet J. Scanlan, Jason Wong, Michael Vu and Fisher Stevens.
In the Grey arrives on digital streaming via premium video on demand on Tuesday, June 2, a new listing on Prime Video confirms. In addition to Prime Video, In the Grey will be available to purchase for $24.99 on such digital platforms as Apple TV, Fandango at Home and YouTube Movies & TV.
Since digital rentals typically are $5 less than purchase prices, viewers should be able to rent In the Grey for $19.99 for a 48-hour period.
‘In The Grey’ Has Only Earned $13.4 Million At The Worldwide Box Office To Date
The release of In the Grey on PVOD comes less than three weeks after the film premiered in theaters on May 15. Released by independent studio Black Bear, In the Grey struggled in its opening weekend at the box office, earning $4.1 million from 2,018 North American theaters.
To date, In the Grey has earned $5.6 million domestically and nearly $7.8 million internationally for a worldwide box office tally of $13.4 million. The film had a $70 million production budget before marketing costs, according to World of Reel, although SlashFilm reported that the budget was between $40 million and $60 million. Even on the low end, In the Grey is facing major losses with its dismal box office take.
In The Grey earned a 48% “rotten” critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer based on 52 reviews. The RT Critics Consensus for the movie reads, “Pitting together charismatic stars in an underpowered caper, Guy Ritchie’s In the Grey is a slick action vehicle whose lack of fresh ideas ultimately put its entertainment value in the red.”
RT users, however, reacted to In the Grey in a positive light, awarding the film an 83% “fresh” score on the site’s Popcornmeter based on 500-plus verified user ratings.
