The Atlanta Braves entered the trade deadline in an unfamiliar position, balancing an injury-plagued season with decisions about both the present and future. While the front office still has the chance to fortify a pennant contender before the final push, one notable development involving ace Spencer Strider underscored just how dramatically the club’s plans have changed over the course of the season.
After the team swung a sudden four-player trade late on Saturday night, news surfaced that it had made a harsh decision on Strider that evidently marked the end of his season.
Atlanta Braves Make Decision On Former Ace Spencer Strider Before Big Trade
As attention focused on a sudden Brave transaction with the Kansas City Royals, fans might have missed an update about where things stand with the one-time franchise ace.
“Strider — also likely done for the season,” MLB.com’s Mark Bowman reported on X. “Locker was cleared out last homestand.”
Late last month, the Braves opened a three-game set at home against the Los Angeles Dodgers, and it seems the team quietly ruled out Strider for the rest of the year shortly before that series began.
Strider landed on the injured list in mid-June with right elbow inflammation and later met with renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Keith Meister, who prescribed extended rest. Although Atlanta expected to reevaluate Strider around the All-Star break, no formal update followed, and Bowman’s report about Strider’s locker being cleared suggests the organization is no longer expecting him back this year.
Before the injury, Strider struggled through eight starts, posting a 5.31 ERA with a 1.36 WHIP across 39 innings while battling command issues that resulted in a 12.8% walk rate.
Atlanta Braves Swing 4-Player Deal Shortly After Spencer Strider Decision
Not long after the Strider update surfaced, Atlanta completed an unexpected four-player trade with the Kansas City Royals.
“The Braves acquired outfielder Lane Thomas and minor league left-hander Bailey Falter from the Royals in exchange for two minor league pitchers Saturday,” the Associated Press reported. “The Braves sent right-hander Lucas Braun and left-hander Carter Holton to the Royals. Braun was a 2023 sixth-round draft pick by the Braves and reached Triple-A Gwinnett, where he was 5-2 with a 3.92 ERA this season. Holton was a 2024 second-rounder who made six starts for Class A Augusta this season.”
The deal may not replace the impact of losing one of baseball’s most electric starters, but it demonstrates Atlanta’s willingness to keep making moves even after injuries dramatically altered the trajectory of its season.
