The Philadelphia Phillies entered Monday night with an unusual challenge: facing star Arizona Diamondbacks infielder Ketel Marte in his first game back after an unexplained absence that had drawn considerable attention around Major League Baseball.
Marte returned to the lineup against Philadelphia after apologizing to his teammates and addressing the media about that sudden departure, though his apology left some wanting more and he was greeted with some boos from home fans in his first at-bat.
“Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte, showing no emotion Monday, apologized for going AWOL for the fourth consecutive season, spoke to the media and apologized to his teammates, had no message to D-backs fans, didn’t find anything wrong with hanging out at a casino while his teammates played a game 30 minutes away, and then got ready to play against the Philadelphia Phillies,” Bob Nightengale reported for USA Today. “He acted as if he did nothing more than commit a baserunning blunder.”
That backdrop made Marte’s return particularly interesting for the Phillies, whose roster consists of several highly paid star players who perform under a significant microscope in one of the country’s biggest media markets and most sports obsessed cities.

After Marte’s return, one of Philadelphia’s highest-profile veterans, Trea Turner, was asked about the situation and offered a candid perspective while acknowledging that he did not possess any real details about the situation.
Without pointing to Marte specifically, Turner emphasized that playing an entire MLB season naturally requires players to accept the obligations that come with their contracts. Those players who cannot meet the obligations, he noted, should not be playing in the big leagues.
“We haven’t had a summer off in, you know, some of us in 20 years,” Turner said, according to Phillies Nation’s Destiny Lugardo. “We’d love to be on a boat and do that, but, you know, it’s what we signed up for. That’s why we get paid. It’s just like any other job in the sense of what is asked of you and if you don’t want to do it, then you shouldn’t be here.”
Turner’s remarks provide an obvious contrast to the circumstances surrounding Marte’s absence, although the Phillies shortstop stopped short of judging a situation he acknowledged that he did not fully understand.
“In Philly, you would definitely have to have good answers in a sense that it’s something really important,” Turner added, per Lugardo. “So, I don’t know. I don’t want to speculate. I don’t know what’s going on. I haven’t read enough, just hopefully everything is OK on his end.”

The comments are notable from Turner who has faced considerable pressure to not only show up but to perform at a star level since signing an 11-year, $300 million contract before the 2023 season.
That investment has also placed enormous expectations on Turner and the Phillies’ other veteran leaders. Philadelphia expects its highest-paid players to remain available and accountable through the grind of a 162-game schedule, particularly when the postseason approaches.
Turner did not suggest he knew why Marte was away or what circumstances surrounded his return. Instead, his comments reflected the standard he believes comes with being a major league player. And if Marte simply skipped a game because he did not feel like participating, as appears to be the case, that would not meet Turner’s standard.
