Nvidia will acquire open-source AI model hosting platform Hugging Face for $12.9 billion, CEO Jensen Huang said in a blog post on Thursday, while also committing to keeping the platform open for developers of open models and apps.

Key Facts

In an SEC filing on Thursday, Nvidia said it would acquire Hugging Face in a deal worth $12.9 billion, which it expects to close within the first half of 2027.

The AI giant says it expects to provide “additional resources” for the hosting platform and would support developers using it to upload and download models and datasets.

Huang came out in support of open AI weights and models in an essay published in July, and doubled down on that commitment in a blog post published on Thursday, which noted that developers using Hugging Face will still be allowed to use the computing platforms they want and confirming “NVIDIA compute will not be required to build on or deploy through Hugging Face.”

The deal was first reported last week by The Information, and Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue told CNBC’s “Squawk Box” on Thursday his company reached out to Huang about scaling the company weeks earlier “during the summer.”

This is a breaking story and will be updated.

Surprising Fact

Nvidia has a market cap of about $5.4 trillion, making it the largest company in the world by the metric. The Hugging Face acquisition is one of the company’s biggest deals to date, coming in second only to its massive $20 trillion purchase of AI chip startup Groq in 2025.
