‘Crew Girl’ Dethroned In Netflix’s Top 10 List By A New Horror Show

Crew Girl is Netflix’s new romantic hit, and as it awaits a season 2 renewal, it has lost its crown as the No. 1 show on the service’s top 10 list, a position it only held briefly. That said, the show that unseated it was always likely to do well.

It is Ryan Murphy’s Monster series, back now with Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story, the tale of the famous axe murderer who was…actually acquitted, which you may not know. Though Murphy’s version will obviously take a lot of liberties.

A day after release, The Lizzie Borden Story has debuted at No. 1 on the list. As is tradition, critics and audiences both claim to hate it. Here are the scores for the four monster series so far:

• Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story – 57% critic score, 82% audience score
• Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story – 45% critic score, 58% audience score
• Monster: The Ed Gein Story – 17% critic score, 53% audience score
• Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story – 50% critic score, 27% audience score

Oof. As you can see, out of both types of scores, only a single one is positive, the audience score for Dahmer. Despite relentless criticism, the first three seasons have been nominated for 31 Emmys and won 3. They make an impact, if nothing else, and even if critics don’t like the show, when it’s voting time, it’s still in the conversation.

Lizzie Borden is the oldest tale Murphy has told so far in this anthology, as it takes place in the 1900s. Here’s the synopsis:

“Trapped in a cruel Victorian-era household, Lizzie Borden kills her parents in a gory ax murder that shocks the nation.”

Again, she was acquitted in 1892 for those murders, though no one else was ever charged. She died at 66 from pneumonia. We will see what Murphy makes of that development, and all the events leading up to it.

An interesting note here is that this is a major role for Ella Beatty, daughter of famed actors Annette Bening and Warren Beatty. She’s appeared in other films like Act One and If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, but being in the No. 1 show on Netflix is obviously her highest-profile part to date. Issues with the series seem to be about the show itself, rather than her acting.

We will see how long Lizzie Borden remains on top of the Netflix top 10 list. If past entries are any indication, it may be a while.
