A grand jury declined to bring criminal charges regarding the death of Nolan Wells, an 18-year-old Black teenager who was found dead days after a Fourth of July trip with friends off the coast of Mississippi, the local district attorney said.

District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath, who serves Mississippi’s Jackson County, shared a partially redacted grand jury report on social media late Monday, which said jurors found the circumstances of Wells’ death to be “consistent with drowning.”
In a video message on social media, McIlrath said there is “absolutely no evidence to support the allegations that Nolan’s death and disappearance were racially motivated.”
