The Chicago Cubs entered the 2026 postseason with legitimate expectations of making another deep October run. Instead, their season ended abruptly in San Diego, leaving the organization to confront a disappointing Wild Card exit and some difficult questions about what comes next.

The Cubs were swept by the San Diego Padres in the National League Wild Card Series, falling 4-1 in Wednesday’s decisive game at Petco Park. The loss ended a season in which Chicago returned to the playoffs for a second consecutive year, but it also brought the future of several important veterans into sharper focus.

Among them is Ian Happ, the longest-tenured player on Chicago’s active roster and a four-time Gold Glove winner in left field.

“Happ was drafted by the Cubs in the 2015 MLB Draft and has spent his entire professional career with the Cubs ever since,” Alex Dvorak noted for NBC 5 Chicago. “But he is expected to become a free agent in 2027, leaving his future with the team uncertain.”

After the loss, franchise shortstop Dansby Swanson offered an emotional assessment of what Happ has meant to the Cubs and to him personally.

Chicago Cubs Star Dansby Swanson Reflects On Ian Happ’s Cubs Legacy After Exit

With Happ potentially ending his Cubs career with a brutal postseason sweep, Swanson was asked immediately after the game what his teammate has meant to him.

“That’s a tough one,” Swanson said, getting noticeably choked up in a clubhouse interview with Marquee Sports Network. “He’s meant a lot to me. I think he truly embodies what it means to wear the jersey.”

Happ debuted with the Cubs in 2017 and developed into an established veteran, earning an All-Star selection in 2022 and four consecutive Gold Glove Awards from 2022 through 2025.

That defensive consistency became one part of Happ’s identity in Chicago, but his importance to the organization extends beyond his production. He has been through multiple versions of the Cubs and remained a fixture as the franchise rebuilt around a younger core.

Swanson, who joined Chicago before the 2023 season, clearly developed a particularly close relationship with Happ.

“He’s probably my longest friend that I’ve had here, so yeah, that probably speaks enough for itself,” Swanson added. “He embodies the Cubs more than anyone I know so he’s a big reason why I’m here and I’m very thankful for him.”

Chicago Cubs Face Ian Happ Decision After Playoff Exit

Following the unceremonious playoff exit, Happ is now among the Cubs players whose futures could become a significant offseason storyline, meaning Wednesday’s loss may have been the final game of his Chicago tenure.

That possibility helps explain the emotion surrounding Swanson’s comments. Happ has become closely associated with the Cubs since entering the organization as a first-round pick, and his potential departure would remove one of the most familiar faces from a clubhouse that just experienced another disappointing postseason ending.

After a season that ended far earlier than Chicago hoped, Swanson’s goodbye captured the significance of the franchise’s longest-tenured players.
