After Spider-Man: Brand New Day topped $2.5 billion at the box office, one of the only movies ever to do so, it has finally arrived on PVOD streaming, despite still being a top 10 weekly entry in theaters.

This is not Spider-Man: Brand New Day hitting Disney+ for “free,” but rather being able to be purchased on streaming services like Amazon Prime Video or Google Play. It shares a price across all of them, and it appears Disney and Sony feel like they can push the envelope a little more than usual because, well, it’s a Spider-Man movie that so many people wanted to see that it made $2.5 billion.

The rental and purchase prices for Spider-Man: Brand New Day are $25 and $30, respectively, $5 higher in each category than almost any new release PVOD streaming movie, including ones recently added like Insidious: Out of the Further, Coyote vs. ACME or Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie, which was a mandatory purchase for me due to the incessant demands of my son. Some recent films like The End of Oak Street are already on sale with $10 rentals and $20 purchases. On Amazon Prime Video, you can also buy a 4-movie MCU Spider-Man bundle for $45, if you want to own them all.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day cemented the character’s status as the biggest superhero in the world, which has been the case for quite some time already. The last MCU film, No Way Home in 2021, made $1.9 billion worldwide. No individual superhero film has made anywhere close to that film or Brand New Day. Deadpool and Wolverine made $1.33 billion (technically that’s two superheroes). The next-highest single-hero film besides Spider-Man is Black Panther, with $1.34 billion. Spider-Man now occupies two of the top five slots in MCU box office history, the rest being Avengers films. Spider-Man was in two of those.

So, if you don’t want to pay $25 to watch Spider-Man: Brand New Day once, when can you get it on another service? Things get a bit tricky with the Sony deal with Disney. No Way Home went to Starz, not Disney Plus, after four months on PVOD. It took four years to get to Disney+, one of the longest waits in MCU history. But we’ll see what happens this time around, and if that structure is still in place. The point being, you’ll probably have to pay for a long while, or best case, subscribe to Starz. I think Starz still exists? Pretty sure?
