Netflix has renewed A Different World for season 2! The revival of the hit ‘80s sitcom hit the platform on September 24, so this turn around for renewal has come lightning fast. The series has garnered 4.2 million views, debuted at number 4 on the Global Top 10 English TV list, and hit the top 10 in 15 countries. It’s also been the talk of the Internet as longtime Hillman lovers and a new generation of fans have become enamored with the show.

Season 2 takes place during sophomore year, which means the events of Deborah (Maleah Joi Moon) and her friends’ freshman experience in college will be colored in a new light thanks to “transformative summers.”

They’ll make their return to campus with the idea that “new year, new me” will stick. However, growth isn’t linear and what happened the previous year can’t be erased in a three month period. The group still have to contend with the decisions they made before and during summer break, figure out how to fit new relationships and friendships into the mix, and delve deeper into who they are, who they want to be, and their purpose in life. Expect more mess, laughter, and growing pains.

Where did season 1 leave off? Here’s everything you need to know.

‘A Different World’ Season 1 Ending Explained

Deborah And Shaquille Break Up, Leaving The Door Open For Ellington

Deborah broke up with Shaquille (Cornell Young IV) after she found out that he slept with her RA Candace (Renee Harrison) the night she ended their relationship over his reaction to her kiss with Ellington (Vincent Jamal Hooper).

At the Light the Night gala, her parents—Whitley (Jasmine Guy) and Dwayne (Kadeem Hardison)—apologized for making her feel like they don’t believe in her. They had bought her way into Hillman, but they say they did so because they were concerned she wouldn’t get in otherwise due to the warehouse fire that resulted in NYU rescinding her acceptance into Tisch.

Her parents expressed their pride in her as they’ve witnessed her growth at Hillman during her freshman year, including the protest she led to push the school administration into being transparent with students and faculty about the institution’s financial crisis, the solutions to remedy the issue, and the path forward as they get back on track.

Though she still owes her parents thousands of dollars for the lash instillations she got for her whole dorm, they’ve granted Deborah permission to spend the summer in the Brooklyn condo.

During the gala, Deborah considered giving Shaquille another chance after Amir (Jordan Aaron Hall) went to bat for her ex and his love for her. However, he blocked her just like she’d done to him the previous summer. When she went to her dorm room, she found Ellington setting up a romantic surprise.

He wanted to apologize for taking credit for the flowers Shaquille left her at the talent show and make it clear to Deborah how much he likes her. Ellington intends on fighting for what he wants, and she decided to let him despite her heart still being with Shaquille. The two kissed in front of her bed where Ellington had spread roses after lighting candles throughout the room.

Shaquille Leaves Hillman For Colorado

Devastated by their break-up, and struggling to see a future for himself at Hillman, Shaquille went against his word and entered the transfer portal. All season he’d been adamant that he wanted to honor his late mother Jaclyn’s (Halle Berry) wish for him to attend her alma mater but aside from the friendships he’d made, it didn’t work out for him.

The football season was stop and start. First, Shaquille began it as back-up quarterback, then he was starter until Coach Coles (Cliff “Method Man” Smith) found out that he’d accidentally injured their QB1 Andre (Joshua Suiter) during a fight. There was also a botched interview where Shaquille’s words got twisted into him basically calling himself God’s gift to Hillman’s football program. He had to earn his way back into his team’s good graces.

His father, Ron (Darryl M. Bell), insisted that he needed to take his talents where they’d be seen and properly compensated. Finally, when he was heartbroken, Shaquille listened to him and took up Deion Sanders’ offer to play for the University of Colorado’s Buffaloes.

Rashida And Kojo Break Up After The Truth About Andre Comes Out

After a massive storm, Rashida (Alijah Kai) and Kojo’s (Chibuikem Uche) romance had reignited. He’d been open with her about his virginity and how his push for them to be intimate had stemmed from his own insecurities. Before the gala, the two slept together and it looked like they’d be spending the summer with one another at Hillman.

Rashida told her mom, Darlene (Tichina Arnold), that instead of returning home to work at her family’s corner store, she’d be accepting the extension her professor, Freddie Brooks (Cree Summer), offered her to continue assisting on her sex-trafficking case. She received her mom’s blessing but her excitement over her summer plans was short-lived thanks to her conversation with Andre that Kojo overheard.

Andre has been struggling with being ghosted by Rashida after they slept together. He wanted to know whether he’d done something wrong. She was in the middle of trying to assure him that he hadn’t and that she’d been dealing with her own issues when Kojo made his presence known. Upset that she’d lost her virginity to Andre and hadn’t told him, Kojo broke things off. Rashida spent the rest of the night crying in her mother’s arms at the Pit.

Meanwhile, Kojo was propositioned by Nneka (Uche Moxam), a member of the Haus Authority who initially didn’t give him the time of day before his fashion show. The two didn’t get far in their conversation before an ICE agent rolled up and demanded to know if they had their papers on them.

Hazel Gets Into A Leadership Program And Receives Unwelcome News From Bunny

Ever since her break-up with Jalen (Elijah J. Roberts) over him cheating on her with Amir, Hazel (Kennedi Reece) has been focused on herself and her goals. She plans on helping the Hillman community by working within the system as the newly crowned Miss Gilbert Hall.

Part of that journey was getting her application in for Congresswoman Lena James’ (Jada Pinkett Smith) leadership institute. The politician took a shine to her when she was visiting and felt that Hazel would be a great candidate. The institute’s admission team felt the same as she was ecstatic to share with Deborah and Rashida that she got into the D.C. program. Hazel wants to use the skills she’s set to learn to be an even better leader on campus in her sophomore year.

At the Light the Night gala, Hazel struck up a flirtation with Xavier (Dasan Frazier). The two had clashed at the congresswoman’s brunch but the livestreamer let Hazel know that he likes a sharp tongue. Intrigued, Hazel was upfront with him about having a long distance boyfriend. She hadn’t told Jalen that when they were dating and she promised herself she’d be honest going forward. Undeterred, Xavier continued to show interest.

All was going well for Hazel until she received a text from Bunny, her boyfriend back in Elgin. He got into Hillman, and he’s looking forward to being at college together in the fall. Judging by Hazel’s face while reading the message, she was not happy about Bunny’s “good news.”

Amir Violates His Probation And Leaves Jalen Hanging

Amir hadn’t intended on giving Jalen a chance. He’d betrayed his friendship with Hazel because it felt good being wanted. However, when Jalen stepped to him after the protest and kissed him, he considered the possibility of giving a relationship a go because Jalen made it clear he’d like to pursue more than a hook-up.

The star basketball player gave Amir the option to meet him in the garden during the gala but before he could do that his probation officer Mr. Larry (Rainbow Sun Francks) caught up with him. Amir had been staying on top of their check-ins but he missed one due to the protest. As a result, Larry had to report him and now there’s a warrant out for Amir’s arrest.

Dwayne Calls Denise For Help

Though Dwayne was able to steer Hillman out of its financial crisis, and avert a student revolt, he didn’t land the position of president at the college. Whitley had heard that he was going to permanently take up the role but Senator Byron’s (Joe Morton) speech at the gala proved that wasn’t the case. He has someone else in mind though he didn’t mention who.

Off-screen, Dwayne had called Denise (Lisa Bonet) and she returned his call in the middle of the night. He answered it while Whitley was sleeping and thanked his old friend for getting back to him. Dwayne told her that he needs her. Presumably, he wants Denise in his corner as he fights to be Hillman’s president.

Though Dwayne’s feelings for Denise should be ancient history at this point, they could play pivotal role in his storyline with Whitley. They just got their marriage back on track after a separation and Dwayne’s hurt over his wife turning to her ex Byron for help with Hillman. Though he and Denise aren’t exes, the set-up is similar and could get messy considering Denise is divorced and her son, Ellington, is interested in Deborah.
