At this point, it doesn’t seem like it can be spelled out more clearly. In a new interview with Screenrant, actress Adria Arjona, who has an action movie, Onslaught out next week, talked about her training for Man of Tomorrow, the Superman sequel arriving in 2027.
“I have muscles that I’ve never had in my life. I’m training two to three hours a day on a crazy diet,” Arjona said. “Drinking coffee is the only thing that keeps me up. And I’m really excited!”
That would be a fairly normal quote were it not for one fact: We still have no idea who she is actually playing in the movie, which is not the case for essentially any other actor announced. That all translates into one, pretty inescapable conclusion, that Arjona is playing Wonder Woman, who will be introduced in Man of Tomorrow and go on to hold the key role in the larger DCU.
Why so certain? Because we just went through this exact same situation with mega-blockbuster Spider-Man: Brand New Day. That movie also had a high-profile actress, Sadie Sink, cast in a mystery role, yet it was never revealed until the film was actually released. As many suspected, Sink was playing Jean Grey, the first X-Man introduced in the MCU, which is why her role was kept hidden.
It makes no sense to hide a role that is not incredibly important in one of these superhero universes. There were many reports at first that Arjona was playing Maxima in the film, a C-tier Superman foe obsessed with Clark, wanting him for her “mate.” The question, of course, is why a random character like that would need to be hidden. That was not the case for any past supporting actors in Superman, for instance, the Justice Gang trio. New villain Braniac was announced with his actor confirmed almost immediately (Lars Eidinger).
Like Sink, there is also the physical resemblance. Adria Arjona simply looks like a live-action version of Wonder Woman, and she has been the subject of fan casts and insider rumors about the role for years. The relentless focus on her workout routine would seem to indicate training for what will be one of the most important roles in the DCU, a powerful Amazon (The potential issue there is that Arjona is only 5’5).
Arjona has a long history and friendship with DCU head and Man of Tomorrow director James Gunn, who jump-started her career with a role in The Belko Experiment, and she credits him for her journey toward stardom, saying she would never have gotten a role in Andor without him. Gunn is well-known for casting his family members and friends in his movies, and it stands to reason that giving Arjona a key role would be in keeping with that pattern. He already cast her boyfriend, Jason Momoa, as Lobo in Supergirl.
The point being, this is Brand New Day all over again. No, Arjona will probably not play a huge role in Man of Tomorrow like Sink, but it seems likely to serve as an introduction for Diana before she gets her own project in the future. There would be no other reason for this character to remain a secret and have everyone dance around it. That was the case for Jean Grey, and it is almost certainly the case for Wonder Woman here.
