Key Facts
During an interview with Fox News host Laura Ingraham, Mullin claimed the number of undocumented immigrants in the U.S. was “as high as” 23 million during the “Biden years” and suggested the number could be “50 million” if one goes back to the Obama administration.
Mullin didn’t cite specific data to back his claims, but data published by the Pew Research Center suggested the number of undocumented migrants was around 14 million in 2023, while data from the Migration Policy Institute pegs the number at around 15.8 million in 2024.
The DHS secretary then claimed that the Democratic Party is trying to turn the U.S. into a “socialist country,” and they have to “change the demographics” for that to happen.
Mullin said that right before he went on air, he asked ChatGPT, “How do you change a red state,[to] blue?” and the first thing that popped up was, “You must change the voting demographics.”
Non-citizens, including undocumented immigrants, are barred from voting in federal elections, state-level elections, or most local elections.
Mullin then added that “amnesty” for undocumented migrants will never happen “under President Trump’s watch or the Republicans’ watch.”
How Does ChatGPT Respond To Queries About Turning Red States Blue
When asked “How do you change a red state to blue?” or “How do you turn a red state blue?” the free version of OpenAI’s ChatGPT listed several potential factors, whose order changed slightly when asked multiple times. In one instance, the chatbot listed “Demographic change” at the top of the list, but it didn’t specifically mention immigration, stating instead that “population growth, migration, age distribution, and urbanization can alter the electorate.” Another response listed “Responding to changing demographics and issues” fourth and noted the increase in Hispanic voters since 2006. However, the chatbot noted that “graphic change doesn’t automatically translate into votes for either party,” citing Trump’s massive gains from Hispanic voters in the 2024 elections. Other factors listed across multiple responses included persuading voters, boosting turnout, and candidate quality.
