On Monday, DC Studios reported that, despite filming took place as recently as this past weekend, production on The Batman Part II would be paused because director Matt Reeves needed to deal with a personal matter. Here’s the text of the statement:

“Production on The Batman Part II has been temporarily paused while Matt Reeves focuses on a family matter. Matt has the full support of DC Studios and we look forward to continuing the journey soon.”

This is the first official word on Reeves dealing with some sort of personal family matter, something that was rumored about but never confirmed over the past few years when the film was still being written. While most fans have been understanding as to the range of reasons something like this may be happening, there has been a surge of online hate toward Reeves and the timeline of The Batman Part II after years’ worth of delays.

A sampling of responses in the comments of a number of these news announcements:

  • “They should bring in Snyder like they brought in Whedon #PoeticJustice”
  • “I’m sorry but Matt reeves is getting f—ing annoying now”
  • “Step aside and let someone else finish it. Many people have personal issues, illnesses, deaths, and just have to keep trucking along. One man’s personal life warrants an entire leg of a movie studio to come to a halt, affecting hundreds or other people’s jobs and livelihoods?”

There are hundreds of these, and the cruel comments are joined by immediate suggestions of which directors should take over the film instead of him, or if it’s time to cancel the film and shut down this corner of the DC universe entirely if he’s unable to continue.

There is the obvious fact that the man’s personal family matter is severe enough to warrant something like this, no matter what it might be. We have also already gone through a similar situation in the superhero industry, where Black Panther actor Chadwick Boseman was criticized for his thinner appearance, with some even accusing him of substance abuse or method acting for some future role. It was only after his shocking death at age 43 that it was revealed he had been silently battling colon cancer for four years. While we don’t know what’s happening with Reeves, the public should know better than to start lambasting him for delaying a superhero movie as what they believe is the most important aspect of this situation.

Sure, it’s possible that Reeves may leave the project eventually, depending on the situation, but calling for that and insulting him is despicable, especially with zero confirmed knowledge of the situation, only rumors. And those rumors make this sound very serious indeed.

All the best to Matt Reeves, and The Batman Part II will arrive when it arrives.
