What feels like the worst-kept secret in the industry is the theory that actress Adria Arjona, girlfriend of DCU Lobo Jason Momoa and longtime friend of DCU head James Gunn, has been cast as Wonder Woman in Gunn’s new superhero universe. Now, Arjona has been on a promotional run for her new movie, Onslaught, out this weekend, which is only fueling speculation.
Arjona is all over social media with images and video discussing her extremely intensive workouts during and now after this Onslaught rollout, where she says her motivation is simply being in “the DC family.” “The excitement of portraying the woman I’m portraying gives me everything I need to get up,” she says. Mmhmm.
We are once again in a Sadie Sink situation, where everyone theorized her secret role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day was X-Men’s Jean Grey, both in terms of how Sink looked and why the role needed to be a secret at all. It’s identical in Arjona’s case. She already lo0ks like Wonder Woman to begin with, but is now is training intensely to get what is clearly an Amazon-like physique. Then, of course, why would she have a Man of Tomorrow role that needs to be kept a secret? It was once said she was playing Maxima in the film, but it makes no sense that would be the case, hiding a third-tier Superman villain role like that.
The question no longer seems to be if Arjona is playing Wonder Woman, but when it will be confirmed. There are some factors here.
While Arjona is fielding and dodging questions about that potential casting, she is launching an entirely separate action movie this weekend that she wants to do well, Onslaught. The bloody grindhouse feature is her first truly deep dive into action, and will serve as a preview for Wonder Woman’s combat skills to some extent, no doubt. If she were confirmed as Wonder Woman before the film came out, it would overshadow the film entirely. That’s already happening to some extent, but it would be even worse.
The other is that we are past the time gap of when other superhero roles were confirmed in the DCU. David Corenswet as Clark Kent was announced almost exactly two years before Superman came out. Milly Alcock was confirmed as Supergirl a year and a half before that movie, even though she was something of a surprise cameo at the end ahead of her own film.
It does not seem necessary to keep Arjona’s secret all the way until Man of Tomorrow is out in July 2027. If you think she’s having to dodge questions now, ten more months of that would be exhausting (as seen with Sadie Sink), and speculation would start to overwhelm everything else about the film. Reportedly, the potential Wonder Woman will only be in a few scenes of Man of Tomorrow, an introduction, not a true partnership.
The other thing about what’s happening with Arjona now is that it would seem that a standalone Wonder Woman movie wouldn’t be all that long afterward. We know that Supergirl writer Ana Nogueira was given Wonder Woman to work on, making it a higher priority than it was previously meant to be. And it seems unlikely that Arjona is training this hard for a handful of screen time in Man of Tomorrow and continue that pace and intensity for years and years until her own movie. Rather, the more likely answer is that she might begin filming her film shortly after that. The DCU knows it needs to start rolling out bigger-name characters, and Wonder Woman is the third pillar of the Superman and Batman trilogy. I expect we will see her revealed officially shortly after Onslaught’s release, and that we won’t be waiting months and months to confirm what most people already know.
