Today’s Wordle Etymology

“Mound” comes from Middle English mounde, meaning “fence, hedge, or embankment,” ultimately from Latin mundus (“protection” or “fortification”). Its meaning shifted toward a raised bank or heap of earth, giving the modern sense of a small hill or pile.

I was working on a House of the Dragon post (about how HBO should stop making shows about Targaryens and their incestuous nonsense) and so the word HOUSE popped into my head when I played today’s Wordle. I figured no other vowels had any place in this word so I tried to come up with a second guess that had the most common letters I could think of and chose MOUND, hoping to ROUND off some edges, at least if I FOUND some more green boxes. Turns out, MOUND was the Wordle! Huzzah!

It’s funny, I was just messaging with a reader who commented on my remarkable luck. I said I’m not actually that lucky! I rarely get it in 2 (this was my 50th time in nearly 2000 games!) and have only gotten a Wordle-in-one twice! I do think I’m pretty good at strategy, however, and have some luck when it counts. This month I think was more about the Wordle Bot having bad luck, however.

In any case, I just get done with this conversation and go get this insanely lucky Wordle-in-two beating the Bot who took five tries. Irony!

Well, the Bot loses August by a landslide. I get 2 points for guessing in two and 1 for beating the poor Bot and the Bot gets -1 for guessing in five and -1 for losing to me. Our final August totals are:

How To Play Competitive Wordle

• Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
• If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
• Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
• You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!
