The Illuminate Conference was co-hosted by Britney Alston (Fun Love Media / Social Success) and Freddy Cruz (Speke Podcasting). The target audience included Indie podcasters, video/audio content creators, performers, and social media mavens.
Illuminate
Business conferences can be an odious event, with boring presentations, speakers who read their PowerPoint slides and seats that make you squirm. That’s not the case with the Illuminate Conference held in Houston’s Museum District. The one-day conference bubbled over with creative sparks, an appetizing hunger for knowledge from the attendees, energizing speakers, and an agenda that emphasized innovation.
At the Illuminate Podcasting/Social Media Creator Conference, attendees can also tour Houston’s Health Museum where oversized body parts are displayed and explained. Here, you can crawl through a colon! I did try it after lunch and the inside looks just like my colonoscopy photos!
Health Museum
A direct counterpoint to the massive podcasting conferences where the themes are overarching and often overwhelming, and the personal touch is subservient to the agenda, Illuminate, held at Houston’s Health Museum, is a podcasting and social media conference that can transform solo, remote endeavors like podcasting or content creation into a connected, strategic business by breaking down isolation and accelerating business growth. The Conference enabled attendees to break out of the “one person and a microphone” routine by meeting peers, co-hosts, and collaborators face-to-face in a uniquely supportive, non-competitive atmosphere.
Co-Host Britney Alston was candid when discussing the conference: “This might ruffle some feathers, but the difference between our event, Illuminate: A Content Creator Experience and my co-host, Freddy Cruz and I, compared to other events and content experts is that we deeply, DEEPLY care about this work. When it comes to content creation, whether it’s podcasting or social media, the creator has to care if they want the optimal experience.”
Britney continues: “If you JUST want to go viral or just want to make a buck,
it’s not gonna work out real well for you. Unfortunately, so few content experts out there talk about this. Social media and podcasting can help us fulfill our goals and our dreams. They can help us reach other humans in our communities and across the globe that need what we have to offer. Caring about the content is important. It’s complex. And it’s life changing.”
In full disclosure, I attended the event, primarily because the conference focused on independent podcasters and entrepreneurial content creators, but also because Freddy Cruz happens to be one of the finest gentleman in podcasting.
It’s About The Content Creation
Unlike other conferences, Illuminate brought together content creators from related endeavors. For example, podcasters and social media creators often overlap and have similar goals. With the advent of video podcasting, having experts on camera confidence and body image seemed like a natural concept. Even the addition of entertainment marketing made sense with singer Cristina Amaro and DJ, social media creator, and one of the most upbeat people I’ve ever met, Kalum Johnson, otherwise known as K-Dog!
The conference included discussions on a winning strategy about ads for a podcast or other creative endeavor with Vanessa Oler.
In her expletive-filled yet highly informative talk about using ads strategically instead of wasting money, Vanessa outlined how to structure an ad strategy. Vanessa explained the Podcast Value Triangle, which is a strategic framework used in podcasting to describe the dynamic interplay between the guest, the host, and the audience.
Jennifer Bassman discussed the importance of compelling content and avoiding burnout, a real concern for content creators and solopreneurs.
Lolita Guarin is a five-time bestselling author, speaker, and certified stress management coach who helps people turn their personal stories into purpose, confidence, and impact — without stress or being overwhelmed.
Lolita Guarin
While I do not know much about social media, I was fascinated by a discussion on going viral on social media with Dr. Trevor Boffone, who recommended authenticity.
He is a lecturer in the Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies Program at the University of Houston and a Social Media Manager at Fun Love Media. His work using TikTok and social media with his students has been featured on Good Morning America, ABC News, Inside Edition, and Access Hollywood, among numerous national media platforms. Insider named him to their 2020 Doers List, recognizing “trailblazers creating hope and inspiring us.”
The good doctor explained one of his more innovative strategies called 40 for 40 in Houston. On the advent of Dr. Boffone’s 40th birthday, he engaged in 40 events in Houston that he had never done before. It was smash on social media with tens of thousands of hits. It’s one of many reasons why Dr. Boffone has 750,000 followers!
Dan Peterson and Kami Huyse spoke eloquently on different aspects of AI-related topics. After all, ignoring AI is not a smart option. It’s here to stay so we might as well learn how to use it and control it.
Lolita Guarin explained how she helps people publish that book that’s bottled up inside them. Her talk – From Content Creator To Published Author – energized all those in the audience who have a book inside them that are either uncertain how to translate into a published book that sells.
To illustrate the wide appeal of the conference, it attracted people such as Darius Brown, who is an actor, voice actor, and entrepreneur based in Houston. Darius has appeared in indie films such as Rita and Cold Turkey, as well as television series including The First (Hulu) and Cloak & Dagger (Freeform).
On Camera Confidence And Honest Conversations
“We do extensive interviews with a potential plastic surgery patient beforehand,” says plastic surgeon Dr. Angela Sturm. “We do that to ensure that there are not any underlying psychological issues that are driving the need for surgery.”
Dr. Angela Sturm
The first presentation tapped into the pulse of podcasting today. With video podcasting becoming more common, appearance has become a viable concern for podcasters.
Houston-based, double board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Angela Sturm kicked off the conference, along with Mavi Rodriguez of the Big Butts No Lies podcast. With the growth in video podcasting, our self-image grabs a larger role in our public persona.
Dr. Sturm and Mavi Rodriguez were interviewed by Freddy Cruz and shared how to become more comfortable with our own appearance. Both women discussed the options available for content creators to improve their physical appearance, with plastic surgery being one option.
Dr. Sturm’s podcast, Beauty Unveiled, explores the art of natural results, the emotional impact of plastic surgery, and empowering individuals to embrace their appearance. On these short yet powerful episodes, Dr. Sturm shares her expertise and stories from the field, offering a unique perspective on the transformative power of aesthetic procedures. Listening to her show, I found my favorite episode was: Aesthetic Moment: Understanding the Dos and Don’ts of Facial Surgery.
On that episode, Dr. Sturm says: “Subtle changes can make all the difference in facial plastic surgery, allowing people to refresh their look without losing their identity, yet going for natural enhancements is often the best choice for maintaining a sense of self.”
One of Mavi Rodriguez’s successful podcast strategies is to re-release popular evergreen episodes for her existing audience and new consumers. It’s a time-proven tactic that is underused by indie podcasters and can deliver more listener/viewer retention and attract a wider audience,
Mavi Rodriguez
Plastic Surgery Patient Coordinator for 18 years Mavi Rodriguez has a successful independent podcast, Big Butts No Lies. I give Mavi a A for a superior podcast title!
On her show you’ll hear a mix of interviews with talented plastic surgeons, influencers and real life patients. The conversations are an exquisite mix of pre-op and recovery tips as well as insight into the industry and breaking down the stigma around plastic surgery.
Mavi Rodriguez told me: “Whether you are considering surgery or simply looking for ways to become the best version of yourself, we hope to arm you with the tools and knowledge you need to make informed choices. If you need one-on-one help, our team is here to support you every step of the way.”
My favorite episode – What Can Go Wrong with Breast Surgery? | Dr. Ryan Couvillion – addresses what patients really need to understand before making a decision — from expectations and safety to how to approach your consultation the right way. As Mavi emphasizes: “This isn’t about trends… it’s about making the right decision for you.”
Going to The Well For Wellness
Two attendees who run entrepreneurial businesses and independent podcasts are Samantha Elizabeth and Dr. Aaron Chapa.
Samantha Elizabeth, who is the creator/host of the Stress Mess: A Stress Less Podcast. told me that when she was younger she was diagnosed with a mass on her adrenal glands that caused her body to release large amounts of cortisol.
Samantha Elizabeth founded Samantha Elizabeth Coaching and Consulting LLC, focusing on employee and client experience, human behavior, and workplace culture. • Health & Wellness Coaching: Certified health and wellness coach with over six years of experience helping individuals with stress management, sustainable habits, and overall well-being.
Samantha Elizabeth
Cortisol is a vital steroid hormone made by your adrenal glands that regulates your body’s stress response, metabolism, blood sugar and immune response. Elevated levels of cortisol can cause constant stress, high blood pressure, and a weakened immune response.
Samantha decided to turn her medical problem into a solution. Samantha told me: “This isn’t your typical “breathe in, breathe out” wellness podcast. It’s honest, occasionally inappropriate, and always aimed at helping you go from a full-blown stress mess… to just slightly less of a mess.Let’s stress less, together.”
My favorite episode is From Loss to Impact! with Jamilah Robinson in which Samantha sits down with Jamilah Robinson, founder of a marketing consultancy and co-founder of Missing Pieces Support Group, a nonprofit created to support women and families experiencing pregnancy loss. Jamilah shares how her personal experiences with recurrent miscarriage led her to seek support, find community, and ultimately build an organization dedicated to helping others navigate grief, healing, and connection.
Together, they explore the emotional, mental, and systemic challenges surrounding pregnancy loss, including the lack of compassionate care in healthcare settings, the isolation many women feel, and the importance of normalizing these conversations.
Illuminate attendee Dr. Aaron Chapa, D.C. is a chiropractor and clinical nutritionist who founded the Living Well Clinical Nutrition Center. He brought part of his family to the conference. Also attending were his wife Tiffani, who is on Instagram as the Wellness Wife, and his oldest daughter Kinsley, who is an adept video editor, which comes in handy for her father’s video podcast.
Here, Illuminate co-host Freddy Cruz interviews Dr. Aaron Chapa, host of Dr. Chapa Wellness on YouTube.
Freddy Cruz Illuminate
Dr. Chapa Wellness on YouTube focuses on topics such as managing chronic fatigue, brain fog, and sleep issues, blood sugar regulation, inflammation, and nutrition, mineral and hydration balance, hormone health, cortisol/stress management, and metabolic wellness.
My favorite episode is Why You Are Still Tired After 8 Hours of Sleep?. In that show, Dr. Chapa dispenses sage advice: “If you are consistently waking up wiped out, stop guessing. Take a close look at your metabolic health, stress management, and daily habits, or get proper lab work done to find out what is really going on. Your fatigue is information. Listen to the signal.”
Physical health goes hand in hand with mental wellness, which is where Disrupt, Delete, Reset. ™ comes in. It’s a podcast that explores and navigates the uh ohs, the oh nos, the heck yeahs of what we call life. Hosted by Andréa Richardson and Taryn Williams Clark, the two discuss all things from work and relationships to culture and self-growth to what they call, “bullsh*t to dope sh*t.” This is a podcast for those looking for a some fresh air, Disrupt. Delete. Reset. delivers perspective, tools, and unfiltered insight to help you move forward with clarity—and a lot of fun along the way.
My favorite episode – Changing the Rules: Art, Healing & Black Maternal Health welcomes Artist Ashley January on surviving what the system got wrong, turning down a scholarship and finding her way back to art, and building her own studio on the South Side. The episode reveals some disturbing statistics – Black mothers die from pregnancy-related causes at more than three times the rate of white mothers, and more than 80% of those deaths are preventable. Ther co-hosts and guest ask: “So who made these rules, and how were they designed to serve?”
Season one of The Middle Mix covered topics ranging from “How to Give Zero Fs” to “Your Advice for 20-Something You.” Season one wrapped up in mid-2026, and Season two is scheduled to premiere in this fall.
The Middle Mix Podcast
Finally, when we were born is often as important as where we were born. Illuminate co-host Britney Alston began a new podcast earlier this year after five years of never missing an episode of her podcast Social Sunshine. The Middle Mix is an audio and video podcast launched in March. The show features conversations tailored specifically for middle-aged people, affectionately referred to as “Middies.
The show focuses on life, relationships, and careers from the perspective of Gen X and Xennials (those born around the late 70s and early 80s). It provides a relatable space exploring topics like midlife divorce, overcoming the fear of judgment, and nostalgic pop culture.
The episode I enjoyed the most was – Are the 90s Making a Comeback? Britney shares some of her favorite things from the 1990s – Cigarettes, chunky shoes, sitcoms – and how they connect to the present day.
Britney tells her audience: “The 90s are most definitely making a comeback, and the Middies are here for it. Get ready to reminisce and laugh during this episode.”
Britney is also the founder and owner of Fun Love Media, an online marketing and media agency, and Small Biz Social Society, a membership platform that aids ambitious entrepreneurs in making their mark on social media.
The Business Of Creativity
Let’s face it. Creativity is also a business. One attendee and one speaker exemplified the success of independent podcasts that focus on business.
For example, Ozeal DeBastos is a podcast strategist, marketing coach, and founder of Ozeal Media and Pod Houston. He founded Pod Houston and Vid Houston to foster collaboration and connect digital content creators in the greater Houston area. His podcast, Creator Factor, is a show for business-minded creators, coaches, and podcasters who want to grow their show, build a magnetic brand, and turn their podcast into a real business.
Each episode gives the audience simple, actionable strategies they can use right away—no fluff, no hype, just real talk from someone who has spent 10+ years. To be clear, Ozeal is not trying to copy Bloomberg. He has a unique vibe, more upbeat urban and approachable than the suit and tie crowd.
In one episode, Ozeal had the Illuminate Co-Host Britney Alston as a guest. Ozeal talked with Britney about her history as a social media thought leader and personal branding expert, with a background in performance arts and an early love for social media.
Allison Lane is a nonfiction book coach, book publishing strategist, and the host of the Authors’ Edge Podcast. While her firm, Lane Literary, is primarily based out of Boston, she is actively connected to the Houston content creation community. Most notably, Allison participates as a featured podcaster and speaker at major local creator events.
Author’s Edge
Attendee Allison Lane has a podcast called The Author’s Edge. It’s a weekly podcast offering practical, no-fluff strategies for writing, finding literary agents or publishers, launching books, building an author platform, maximizing visibility, and turning expertise into speaking gigs or revenue. Solo episodes and interviews with industry leaders, literary agents, and bestselling authors.
Since I am a highly unsuccessful author, it’s logical that my favorite episode is Choose Your Publishing Path: Traditional vs Hybrid vs Self with Trena White. Lane says: “Publishing has never been more accessible. And somehow it’s never been easier to publish the wrong book.”
In that conversation on The Author’s Edge podcast, Allison Lane sat down with Trena White, CEO of boutique hybrid publisher, Page Two. She explains the three publishing paths – traditional vs self vs hybrid publishing, how “hybrid” varies widely, and what boutique hybrid publishing means. Plus, how to choose the path that matches your goals, your timeline, and your definition of success.
Perhaps the most notable success story at the conference came from speaker Victoria Meyer, the creator/host of My Chemical Show. The show focuses on interviews with industry executives, market trends, supply chain challenges, sustainability, AI integration, and leadership strategies. The Chemical Show is the top-ranked business and leadership podcast focused on the global chemical, plastics, and material industries.
Victoria isn’t bragging when she asserts: “The Chemical Show is the #1 business podcast in the chemical industry.”
The show features interviews with chemical industry executives covering key trends and topics including leadership, supply chain, sustainability, customer experience, and digitization. Since launching in April 2021, it has quickly become the go-to podcast for the chemical industry, where listeners gain insights and leaders share their latest news. Over 130 episodes have been published.
The Chemical Show is ranked in the Top 5% of ALL podcasts globally by ListenNotes.
One of the most notable and timely episodes was a show about the Strait Of Hormuz. This episode of The Chemical Show features Farid Tahvildari, Managing Director of NUCO Logistics. Returning to the podcast, Farid provides a straightforward analysis of the ongoing Strait of Hormuz and Red Sea crises and their far-reaching impacts on global shipping, freight costs, and chemical supply chains. He explains how even those not directly trading through these regions are affected by disruptions in marine traffic, rising insurance costs, and energy price volatility.
According to Acast, the vast majority of podcasters—roughly 99% of them — make less than $500 a year. Victoria Meyer, by contrast, makes a comfortable six figures with her podcast and media company, Progressio Global. How does she do it? In a word, sponsors. The show’s notable partners and associations include the American Chemistry Council (ACC), The Chemical Summit, which is an annual industry conference founded and hosted/sponsored in connection with Victoria and the podcast platform, and various featured segment and episode supporters, which have included organizations like Trinity Logistics, The Chemical Company, and NYSHEX (for logistics-focused sub-programming like the Supply Chain Secrets Podcast partner.) Victoria shared plans to expand her platform in the near future.
At the conference, Victoria passed along this piece of wisdom to the independent podcasters in attendance. “The riches are in the niches.” That’s good news for indie podcasters, who specialize in niche podcasts.
Always Time For Recognition And Fun
The last session of the conference was perhaps the most entertaining. That’s when Freddy Cruz, Illuminate co-host and host of his own successful podcast Your Mic took on a challenge that could very well go viral. In that session, Freddy attempted to interview every attendee and speaker at the conference, asking each person one question.
Here, Illuminate Co-Host Freddy Cruz interviews Victoria Meyer, creator/host of My Chemical Show. In the last session of the Illuminate conference, Freddy was going for the record of the most number of people interviewed on a podcast in the shortest amount of time!
Illuminate
Your Mic offers insights, tactics, and mindset strategies. If you are a podcaster searching for a path to growth, join Freddy Cruz as he shares his experience and knowledge to guide you through the podcasting journey.
As a podcast producer, he has assisted The Rose Breast Center of Excellence and The National Museum of Funeral History with the launches of their podcasts, Let’s Talk About Your Breasts and The Final Curtain Never Closes, respectively. The former landed at #8 inside the Apple Podcasts Nonprofits chart, while the latter landed at #29 in the same category. Freddy is also a successful author, with his 2019 bestselling novel When America Fell Silent.
In 2025, Freddy hosted a podcast conference in Houston called Speke Fest 2025: Night of the Living Pod, a live event to help to put an end to the zombie podcast plague. With workshops, games, keynotes, and networking opportunities, attendees left with actionable strategies to resurrect their brand and captivate their audience.
Here, creator Kalum Johnson dances with the two daughters of one of the speakers, Dr. Angela Sturm.
illuminate
To wrap the conference, Britney led the attendees and speakers in a dance off once they had been interviewed by Freddy. Then, gifts were handed out, many of which we donated by the speakers.
Last month, Podcast Movement held one of the largest podcast conferences of the year in New York City. The speakers were the podcasting elite, as were some of the attendees. Wisdom was shared, and insights were passed out like pigs in a blanket at an appetizer hour.
Contrast that with the Illuminate conference. The names weren’t nationally famous; the number of attendees didn’t reach the many hundreds, and podcast creators co-mingled with creators from social media, entertainment, publishing, and wellness.
Yet the conference possesses that sense of intimacy and camaraderie that is typically absent from these massive affairs. Freddy Cruz even brought in a brand new employee, Katie Tindall, a University of Houston grad who has a strategic communication degree (focus in PR) and a minor in marketing. With people from ages 10 to 70 and experience in a variety of careers, Katie was welcomed and became part of the Illuminate tribe.
I learned quite a bit from the speakers, but I think I learned as much from the attendees in between the sessions and at lunch. As Bill Nye, The Science Guy, once said: “Everyone you will ever meet knows something you don’t.”
