The show wasn’t failing, but Kelly Clarkson chose to move in a different direction. “Everything was going well, and that’s what was really hard,” she said in an interview with Carson Daly on TODAY in February.
She didn’t quit, but she did break away. Clarkson said in the same TODAY interview that there was simply too much on her plate and it was time to pull back.

Deloitte surveyed more than 22,500 Gen Zs and Millennials across 44 countries, and only 6% said attaining a leadership position was their primary career goal. And that’s not the only report that found that to be true. Only 41% of workers want a traditional career path, according to Randstad’s 2026 Workmonitor report, which surveyed over 27,000 workers and 1,225 employers across 35 markets. The same report showed that 38% want a variety of jobs across their career.
Portfolio careers are no longer a stepping stone to a secure profession. If anything, they’re becoming the new normal and the future of work. In fact, 72% of employers say that the corporate ladder is outdated, per that same Randstad report.
How Do You Know It’s Time To Walk Away?
Sometimes when everything’s going well, it’s the best time to question how long you should stay at the company. Because if you wait too long, you’re more likely to leave under pressure, leave poorly, and leave with fewer job opportunities.
If you’re contemplating an exit strategy, ask yourself these three questions:
- Are you leaving toward something positive? Clarkson made a move based on her priorities. It wasn’t out of desperation. It wasn’t out of conflict. She left on a high note and with the respect of her entire team.
- Are you able to leave well? It’s true what they say: it’s a small world after all. Regardless of your profession, people talk. Just make sure they have something good to say when they talk about you.
- Are you burnt out or just bored? Sometimes leaving isn’t the answer at all. Sometimes your best bet is cross-training, learning a new skill, or working across different departments.
