The Wrong Girls, starring Kristen Stewart, Alia Shawkat, LaKeith Stanfield and the voice of Seth Rogen, arrives on digital streaming this week after the film fizzled in theaters.

Written and directed by Dylan Meyer, The Wrong Girls stars Stewart and Shawkat as Frankie and Molly, a pair of codependent best friends and fellow potheads living paycheck to paycheck and missing bills. What first seems like an opportunity when they discover a suitcase full of experimental drugs turns into a case of mistaken identity for Frankie and Molly and turns their lives upside down (and messes with their brains when they try out said experimental drugs).

Rated R, The Wrong Girls also stars Geena Davis, Cate Blanchett, Kate McKinnon, Tony Hale and the voice of Kumail Nanjiani.

The Wrong Girls had a tough time igniting audience interest in theaters, earning about $433,600 from 520 North American theaters in its opening weekend Aug. 14-16. The film wrapped up its domestic theater run on Aug. 27 with a box office tally of just over $838,500. The film’s production budget was not available.

The release of The Wrong Girls caps off a decade-long journey for the film for the real-life married couple Stewart and Meyer. The writer-director told The Hollywood Reporter at the film’s red carpet premiere in early August that she sent the Twilight Saga star the script years ago when they first met.

“I probably should have read it many years ago when she sent it to me but then we hung out and I was like, ‘You’re the coolest person I’ve ever met, what are you doing?’” Stewart recalled for THR. “And she was like, ‘Well, what I want to do is this.’ And she’s just my favorite writer and this movie is wish fulfillment, mega-time.”

The RT Critics Consensus for the film reads, “Proudly stupid and surprisingly sweet, The Wrong Girls coasts on Kristen Stewart and Alia Shawkat’s chemistry, even as its barrage of stoner gags produces more genial laughs than truly memorable ones.”

The Wrong Girls fared better with audiences on RT, who gave the film a 69% “fresh” Popcornmeter score based on 50-plus verified user ratings.

The RT Audience summary reads, “The Wrong Girls takes a ridiculous premise and runs with it, delivering a mostly fun stoner comedy with a top-notch cast — Kristen Stewart, Alia Shawkat, and Kate McKinnon prove to be just the right kind of girls to unwind with after a long day at work.”
