The Toronto Blue Jays will not be part of the postseason after a disappointing follow-up to their run to the World Series last year. Toronto was officially eliminated from playoff contention in late September, bringing an early end to a season that never developed as the organization had hoped.
The disappointment was particularly harsh after the expectations created by last year’s championship run.
“From worst to first and then back to worst again. It has been a wildly inconsistent three-year ride for the Blue Jays,” Gregor Chisholm wrote for the Toronto Star. “The 2026 season that began with such lofty expectations following last year’s journey to the World Series went off the rails in May, and despite its best efforts the organization failed to get it back on.”
But while Toronto heads into its offseason earlier than expected, one former Blue Jays slugger has received a very different opportunity.
Former Toronto Blue Jays Slugger Gets Surprising Atlanta Braves Wild Card Opportunity
The Atlanta Braves are preparing for their own postseason run, and that has created a surprising place for a familiar name to many Blue Jays fans.
The Braves announced their roster for the 2026 NL Wild Card round of postseason play on Tuesday morning, and it included long-time Blue Jays slugger Rowdy Tellez.
Tellez originally broke into the majors with Toronto in 2018 and remained with the organization through the first half of the 2021 season before being traded to the Milwaukee Brewers. He has spent eight seasons in the majors across several organizations and Atlanta acquired him on a minor league deal in March.
His path back to the Braves’ postseason roster was hardly straightforward. Atlanta designated Tellez for assignment in July and later had him return to the organization on another minor league contract.
Now, however, the veteran has another chance to contribute when the games matter most.

Tellez is not expected to get much opportunity at first base with superstar Matt Olson at the position, but his power gives manager Walt Weiss another option in specific postseason situations.
“The 31-year-old Tellez will give manager Walt Weiss a lefty-swinging bat off the bench,” Steve Adams noted for MLB Trade Rumors. “He’s not going to start over Olson at first base but can bring plenty of power to the plate in a pinch-hitting role against a tough righty.”
That role could be particularly valuable in a short Wild Card Series, where a single matchup can determine a game and a bench bat can become an important weapon late.
