After almost a century as a privately held business, Parle Products, which is owned by Vijay Chauhan and his family and makes India’s hugely popular Parle G glucose biscuits, is preparing to go public. The much-anticipated IPO is reportedly slated for next year and is expected to raise about $1 billion, valuing Parle north of an estimated $10 billion. Though biscuits account for the bulk of the company’s $1.8 billion annual revenue, its product portfolio also includes confectionery, snacks and breakfast cereals. It has built up a global presence with nine factories outside India, including in Bahrain, Thailand, Nepal and six African countries.
Parle was founded by Chauhan’s grandfather in a Mumbai suburb in 1928 to make confectionery items and expanded into biscuits a decade later with Parle Gluco, the precursor to Parle-G. The company’s biggest rival is listed Britannia Industries, controlled by billionaire Nusli Wadia, with revenue of $2 billion in the year ended March 31. Chauhan appears at No. 31 on the list with an estimated net worth of $7.9 billion. The next generation is represented on the board by his son Ajay, nephews Arup and Samar, and niece Ambika. The Chauhans recently recruited a former PepsiCo executive as CEO.
