The Philadelphia Phillies have regularly leveraged their farm system depth to bring in win-now talent as they pursue a World Series championship in recent seasons.
Now it seems they are willing to look outside of the more traditional avenues to restock the farm talent, as they’ve brought in a minor-league slugger whose journey to affiliated baseball was truly unique.
Philadelphia Phillies Sign Unique 25-Year-Old Slugger
According to his MiLB transaction log, the Phillies have acquired Lyle Miller-Green, a 25-year-old outfielder who was born in Tomsk, Russia.
Miller-Green previously spent time in the Chicago White Sox organization and attracted national attention because of his remarkable background and rare physical tools.
“When the White Sox selected a 23-year-old named Lyle Miller-Green with the 499th overall pick in the Draft in the 17th round on Wednesday, the young man who was saved from a Russian ‘baby house’ by two loving Americans was embraced yet again,” MLB.com’s Anthony Castrovince reported in 2024. “Should Miller-Green, a 6-foot-6 right fielder from Austin Peay, seize this opportunity the way he has his upbringing in the U.S., this Siberian Sultan of Swat is going to be something special.”
When Miller-Green was drafted, he made some history as one of the few Russian-born players to reach affiliated baseball.
“Only five Russian-born players have played in the major leagues in the modern era, but only one — a right-hander named Victor Cole — debuted in the live ball era (since 1920) and was selected in the draft,” Castrovince added. “So for a full-blooded Russian to be selected in this process is unique.”

For the Phillies, the move represents a low-risk opportunity to add another intriguing athlete to the system.
Miller-Green has batted just .241 in his minor-league career, mostly in High-A, so far. And the Phillies signed him after he was released by the White Sox. But while he remains a long-term project, the Phillies have shown a willingness to take chances on athletic players with significant upside.
His combination of size, power potential and unique background makes him a prospect worth monitoring as he begins the next chapter of his professional career.
And for a franchise that continues searching for future contributors wherever they can find them, particularly in the outfield, taking a chance on a 25-year-old Russian-born slugger with uncommon physical tools is the type of move that could eventually pay unexpected dividends.
