The Philadelphia Phillies are trying to squeeze every possible advantage out of their bullpen as the postseason race heats up, and Monday night’s win over the Arizona Diamondbacks offered another reminder of how valuable fresh pitching depth can be.

“The Phillies’ 2-1 win over the Diamondbacks on Monday night was ensured by several nervy performances from their relievers,” Lochlahn March reported for The Philadelphia Inquirer. “The Phillies bullpen, which was without setup man Jonathan Bowlan for workload reasons, covered four scoreless innings to cinch the win.”

With the Phillies navigating workload concerns while preparing for the stretch run, adding another arm to the organizational pitching depth could prove useful. The latest addition, however, comes with a profile that extends well beyond the baseball field.

Philadelphia Phillies Land Houston Astros Veteran With 400 Career Strikeouts

The Phillies have acquired right-hander Sam Carlson shortly after he was released by the Houston Astros amid a strong season in the minors, giving the organization another potential bullpen option while also adding one of baseball’s more recognizable social-media personalities to its system.

“The Philadelphia Phillies have signed Sam Carlson to a minor league contract,” MiLB Central reported on Monday. “The pitcher has a 3.47 ERA along with 43 strikeouts over 36.1 innings in the minors this season.”

Those numbers make Carlson an intriguing depth addition at a particularly important point in Philadelphia’s season. He has also accumulated substantial experience in the minor leagues.

“Carlson has a 4.50 ERA along with 408 strikeouts during his minor league career,” MiLB Central’s Chase Ford added.

The 27-year-old right-hander therefore brings considerably more professional experience than his 2026 numbers alone might suggest. For a Phillies organization focused on building pitching depth for the final weeks of the season, another experienced arm could give the club additional flexibility depending on the exact nature of the addition and the complicated rules surrounding late-season callups.

Whether Carlson eventually gets an opportunity in Philadelphia remains to be seen, but the signing gives the Phillies a pitcher with an interesting off-field following.

Houston Astros Castoff Brings Viral Following To Philadelphia Phillies

Carlson’s baseball resume isn’t the only reason the signing is interesting.

Before joining the Phillies, Carlson built up an unusual online presence that made him something of a viral figure.

The right-hander has a massive TikTok following, with more than 840,000 followers. One video documenting a routine day in his life has surpassed 13 million views, according to the Houston Chronicle’s Matt Kawahara, turning Carlson into a recognizable personality well beyond traditional baseball circles.

For the Phillies, though, the priority is ultimately what Carlson can do on the mound.
