Big Number
$2.7 billion. That is how much Disney was estimated to pay each year for the NFL broadcasting package it secured in 2021.
Key Background
The last time Disney broadcast the Super Bowl was in 2006, when ABC aired Super Bowl XL between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Seattle Seahawks. In addition to securing the rights to broadcast and stream Super Bowl LXI, Disney also secured the rights to cover a second Super Bowl, though it is unclear which one. The package Disney and the NFL agreed to in 2021 runs through the 2033 NFL season and increased ESPN and ABC’s regular season game coverage from 17 to 23 games per year. Broadcasters who secure coverage of the big game are typically able to rake in hundreds of millions of dollars in advertising revenue. In 2025, Fox generated $800 million in ad revenue amid record viewership for the Super Bowl.
