Sweet Shop, a digital comics and manga app that has been in beta mode since January, is launching a public version today for IoS and Android. The Seattle-based company is one of several emerging platforms hoping to tap into the $2.1 billion American comics market with an app that makes it easier to find, buy, read and own comics, manga and graphic novels.

Kenny Meyers, cofounder and CEO of Sweet Shop, says the platform grew to 6,000 users during the beta phase, with unusually high growth and retention rates. “Our conversion rates are above digital standards and we experienced almost no loss of converted buyers. Everyone came back. We’re seeing 56% monthly growth in beta,” he said.

The app offers a lineup of top independent publishers including Image Comics, Dark Horse Comics, IDW Publishing, Oni Press, Ignition Press, Fantagraphics, Silveer Sprocket, Mad Cave Studios and others. Kodansha, Dynamite Entertainment, Titan Comics, Abrams Comic Arts, Glacier Bay Books, Fanbase Press, Iron Circus Comics and Seven Seas Entertainment are coming on board for the public launch.

That list does not include market leaders DC Comics and Marvel Entertainment, and Meyers says there are no plans for those two to join anytime soon. Nevertheless, the app currently offers an inventory of more than 10,000 titles for sale, with more on the way. All titles for sale are through publishers, with no self-published or user-generated content.

“We are highly curated,” says Meyers.

With so many ways for fans to get digital comics these days, Meyers says Sweet Shop’s difference is simplicity and community, with an interface designed to let readers explore and discover new material. The site does not offer subscription plans, tokens or digital collectibles. There’s no AI of any kind used in the back end or for translation. There are no sponsored content links and any DRM protection on files is at the request of publishers, not the platform.

According to the launch announcement, Sweet Shop was “developed without the help of venture capitalist aid or angel investments” and “built organically by a group of dedicated comic fans who wanted to answer the questions of where do I get started and what’s next.”

Meyers says the company’s bootstrap growth philosophy helps Sweet Shop stay true to its vision, without the need to systematically diminish the user experience to juice growth and revenue numbers for investors.

“Most venture backed or public tech companies are incentivized to hurt creators and take money away from publishers and people making art,” says Meyers. “We don’t want investors pushing AI tools that will ruin comics. We have a pretty heavy anti-AI stance. We reject it entirely.”

Instead, Sweet Shop is focusing on basic features that provide convenience for fans and publishers, like in-app purchases, creation of wish lists, online reading, library management, PDF backup and download of any titles without DRM, and what the company describes as “fast, high resolution in-app reading that transitions between vertical and paging mode.”

Prior to launching Sweet Shop, Meyers was cofounder of another digital comics startup, Omnibus. His new company, cofounded with CTO Ben Carr and COO/CDO Matthew Anderson, also offers a comic store locator app that has become the industry standard, and a marketing platform for publishers and creators.
