Taylor Swift’s “Patient Zero” misses the 2027 Grammy eligibility window, though The Life of a Showgirl and several recent singles remain eligible. Taylor Swift is about to release a new single, which could become a huge hit right out of the gate – but fans should not expect to see “Patient Zero” compete for any prizes at the upcoming Grammy Awards.
The superstar’s latest single arrives September 25, and its rollout already suggests Swift is treating it as an important release. Whatever happens commercially, though, the track will not factor into the nominations being decided this fall. Instead, Swift is all but beginning another potential awards cycle before the Recording Academy has had a chance to recognize much of her previous work.
“Patient Zero” Missed the Grammy Deadline by a Month
Eligibility for the 2027 Grammy Awards ran from August 31, 2025 through August 28, 2026. “Patient Zero” will drop four weeks after that window closed, which means it cannot compete at the ceremony scheduled for February 7.

That remains true regardless of how successful the single becomes, but the timing may make its possible eventual recognition feel odd. If “Patient Zero” debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 or develops into one of the biggest hits of Swift’s career, none of that can help it earn a nomination this time around.
Instead, the song could potentially factor into the 2028 Grammys. So, “Patient Zero” may become the biggest song in the United States, and possibly even the world, in October 2026 – and then not snag a piece of hardware from the Recording Academy until the early months of 2028.
“Patient Zero” Could Start Taylor Swift’s Next Grammy Campaign
It is far too early to suggest that “Patient Zero” will become a Grammy nominee, though her history with music’s biggest night makes the track one to watch.
“Cardigan” earned Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance nominations. “Anti-Hero” competed for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance, while “Fortnight” featuring Post Malone, was up for Record and Song of the Year as well as Best Music Video. All of those tunes – and more – began new eras for Swift, just as “Patient Zero” may as well, though the musician hasn’t yet stated if another album is on the way.
Taylor Swift Already Has Plenty Of Music Eligible For 2027
Missing the deadline with “Patient Zero” does not leave Swift without Grammy possibilities this season. The Life of a Showgirl was released in October 2025 – comfortably inside the eligibility period that just wrapped. The full-length could be submitted for categories including Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album, while singles “The Fate of Ophelia,” “Opalite” and “The Life of a Showgirl” with Sabrina Carpenter all offer possible routes to more gold.
First-round voting does not begin until October, and the nominees will be announced on November 16. Nothing is certain until the songs and albums that are vying for honors are officially revealed by the Recording Academy, but with Swift, it’s rarer for her to miss earning some major nods than for her to end up in some of the toughest races at the Grammys.
Taylor Swift Could Also Return to the Country Categories
“I Knew It, I Knew You” gives Swift an entirely separate collection of nomination possibilities. The Toy Story 5 single arrived in June, well before the Grammy cutoff, and has been promoted as a country release. It debuted at No. 1 on the Hot Country Songs chart and has performed well on a variety of tallies, especially those built around the genre.
“I Knew It, I Knew You” may wind up a nominee in either Best Country Solo Performance or Best Country Song, or perhaps both. Because Swift and Jack Antonoff wrote the song for Toy Story 5, the Best Song Written for Visual Media vertical is also entirely plausible.
Swift could enter Grammy season with viable work spanning pop, country, soundtrack music and the general field, making her one of the most nominated acts at the 2027 ceremony – all while “Patient Zero” likely continues its successful run on the charts, potentially heading for its own Grammy glory later on.
