The Rolling Stones are harkening back to a time when singles were released with an A-side and a B-side. Less than a month before the band drops a new album titled Foreign Tongues – which is expected this Friday (July 10) – the legendary group shared another double single from this era.
The first taste of Foreign Tongues came with two songs. “In the Stars” was the main single, while “Rough and Twisted,” which was originally released under the band name the Cockroaches as a promotional stunt, served as something of the B-side – though such a concept doesn’t really exist now that only a handful of popular tunes are released on vinyl.
Just before the world gets to hear Foreign Tongues in its entirety, “Jealous Lover,” which dropped at the same time as “Divine Intervention,” becomes a bestseller in the United Kingdom, though the group is blocked from a new No. 1 on multiple tallies.
The Rolling Stones Nearly Hit No. 1 with a New Single
“Jealous Lover” nearly nets the Rolling Stones a new No. 1 smash on two rankings that look only at purchases of songs in the U.K., but in both instances, the Grammy-winning outfit stops just short. “Jealous Lover” debuts at No. 2 on both the Official Singles Sales and Official Physical Singles tallies.
The Rolling Stones Have Charted Just One Sales No. 1
Surprisingly, the Rolling Stones have only scored one No. 1 hit on the Official Singles Sales chart, the main ranking of the top-selling tracks of any style and via any format throughout the U.K. “Angry,” the first taste of Hackney Diamonds – the most recent Rolling Stones album before Foreign Tongues – spent one frame in the top spot during its 12-week run.
“Jealous Lover” Joins Several Rolling Stones Near-Misses
“Jealous Lover” earns the Rolling Stones an eleventh career appearance on the Official Singles Sales chart, and it is not the only composition to miss out on ruling by one spot. In fact, four different songs have peaked at No. 2. “Jealous Lover” follows “Living in a Ghost Town,” “Sweet Sounds of Heaven,” a collaboration with Lady Gaga, and “In the Stars,” the lead single from Foreign Tongues, which all peaked in second place.
The Rolling Stones Have Scored Five Physical Sales No. 1s
The Rolling Stones have fared significantly better on the Official Physical Singles chart in every respect. Back in May, the band earned its fifth champion as “In the Stars” reached the top spot. Previous hits “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” “Ride ‘Em on Down,” “Living in a Ghost Town” and “Angry” also led the charge.
“Jealous Lover” Lands in Second Place
Just as is the case on the Official Singles Sales chart, multiple tunes by the Rolling Stones have risen as high as No. 2 on the Official Physical Singles rundown and stopped climbing. That roundup now includes “Jealous Lover.” Previously, “Rock and a Hard Place” and the aforementioned “Sweet Sounds of Heaven” peaked in the same position.
Phoebe Bridgers Blocks the Rolling Stones
On both the Official Singles Sales and Official Physical Singles charts, Phoebe Bridgers bests the Rolling Stones. The singer-songwriter’s latest cut “Lost Boys” opens at No. 1. The track is the first from Bridgers to conquer the Official Singles Sales tally, and her second on the Official Physical Singles ranking. Bridgers has only pushed two tunes to the latter rundown, and both “Kyoto” and “Lost Boys” ruled for a time.
“Jealous Lover” Debuts on Multiple U.K. Charts
“Jealous Lover” debuts on another pair of rosters in the U.K. as well as the two sales tallies. The Rolling Stones cut begins its time at No. 5 on the Official Vinyl Singles chart, earning the group its milestone twentieth hit on that list, and its lucky thirteenth top 10. “Jealous Lover” clearly succeeded largely thanks to sales on physical formats, as the tune opens at No. 89 on the Official Singles Downloads tally.
