Tom Petty has been gone for coming up on 10 years. The rock superstar died in the fall of 2017 after enjoying a decades-long career as a hitmaker and a beloved and respected singer-songwriter.
Petty never disappears from the Billboard charts in America, thanks to the enduring popularity of his Greatest Hits compilation with his backing band, the Heartbreakers. In other parts of the world, however, it often takes a small increase in sales or a sudden surge in interest for the musician to appear on a ranking posthumously.
This week, Petty returns to one roster in the United Kingdom with one of the least likely smashes in his catalog — but also one of his highest-charting hits on the list on which it appears.
Tom Petty Narrowly Returns to One Chart
“Last Dance with Mary Jane,” Petty’s collaboration with Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre, finds its way back to the Official Physical Singles chart this week. The single reappears at No. 100, barely managing to reach the tally as it settles into last place.
The Official Physical Singles chart ranks the bestselling individual tunes in the U.K. on formats such as vinyl and CD. Downloads and streaming activity do not factor into the weekly order, and the roster has become more competitive in recent years as die-hard fans now love purchasing tunes on some physical format to support the artists they love.
Tom Petty’s Hit Scores a Second Week as a Bestseller
“Last Dance with Mary Jane” appears on the Official Physical Singles ranking for only the second time. The track debuted in July 2025 at No. 53, then disappeared immediately. It had not been seen since – that is, until its return one year later.
Tom Petty Is Sampled on the Snoop Dogg Track
“Last Dance with Mary Jane” plays on — and samples — “Mary Jane’s Last Dance,” the longtime favorite by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Petty’s voice is included in the newer recording, and he receives an official artist credit in the U.K.
Jelly Roll is also featured on the song alongside Snoop and Dre. Interestingly, although the rock and country musician is officially attached to the recording, his name does not appear in the British chart credit, while Petty’s does because of the sampled vocal.
The cut appears on Snoop’s album Missionary, which arrived in 2024. Dre produced the project and is officially credited on “Last Dance with Mary Jane” as well.

Tom Petty Scored His Fourth Physical Hit
When “Last Dance with Mary Jane” first reached the Official Physical Singles chart in July 2025, it gave Petty his fourth career placement on the roster. It also became his first posthumous hit on the format-specific tally.
Its No. 53 debut came extremely close to matching the performance of “Mary Jane’s Last Dance.” The original tune arrived on the ranking in March 1994 and peaked at No. 52 – only one slot higher than the Snoop reworking.
“Last Dance with Mary Jane” still stands as Petty’s second-highest-charting hit on the Official Physical Singles chart. “You Wreck Me” spent one week on the ranking and peaked at No. 88. “You Don’t Know How It Feels” also lasted for only a single frame and climbed no higher than No. 91.
Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre Have Charted Far More Hits
Both Snoop and Dre have performed significantly better than Petty on the Official Physical Singles chart when looking at their total number of appearances.
Dre has accumulated 12 wins on the ranking. Only one of them, “Dre Day,” stalled in a lower position than the No. 53 peak reached by “Last Dance with Mary Jane.” Snoop has collected 29 entries on the tally. Only two of those cuts have peaked beneath the position reached by his collaboration with Petty and Dre.
Despite his much larger number of smashes, Snoop has never managed to rule the Official Physical Singles chart. Several of his songs have come extremely close, though. “Signs” with Charlie Wilson and Justin Timberlake, “Buttons” with the Pussycat Dolls, “I Wanna Love You” with Akon and “California Gurls” with Katy Perry all missed the summit by only one space.
