Toy Story 5, starring the voices of Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and Joan Cusack, is shifting over to streaming on Disney+ this week after a blockbuster run at the summer box office.
The Toy Story franchise, of course, kicked off in 1995, where the cowboy puppet figure Woody (Hanks) and spaceman action figure Buzz Lightyear (Allen) united for their first adventure along with several other classic toys. The film’s first sequel, 1999’s Toy Story 2, introduced the rest of the toy characters from the cowboy’s Woody’s Roundup classic 1950s TV show, including Jessie the Yodeling Cowgirl, her horse,Bullseye, and Stinky Pete the Prospector (Kelsey Grammer).
After 2010’s Toy Story 3 and 2019’s Toy Story 4, Woody, Buzz, Jessie and Bullseye returned for Toy Story 5, which opened in theaters on June 19 and debuted on digital streaming on Aug. 18. In the new film, Jessie, Buzz and the rest of Bonnie’s (Scarlett Spears) toys feel left out when the young girl gets a new tech tablet, Lilypad (Greta Lee), from her parents as a way to help her make friends.
However, when Bonnie is teased by her new friends for playing with old toys like Jessie and Bullseye, the cowgirl and her trusty horse go on an unexpected adventure to reconnect with the first child who played with them. Concerned about Jessie and Bullseye’s whereabouts, Woody and Buzz go on a mission to find them, along with a small army of factory-fresh, high-tech Buzz Lightyear figures.
Toy Story 5’s voice cast also includes including Keanu Reeves, Craig Robinson, John Ratzenberger, Annie Potts, Lori Alan, Jay Hernandez, Bonnie Hunt, Kristen Schaal, Tony Hale, John Hopkins, Wallace Shawn, Ernie Hudson, Krys Marshall, Jeff Bergman, Blake Clark, Anna Vocino, Jerome Ranft, Matty Matheson, Melissa Villaseñor, Shelby Rabara, Mykal-Michelle Harris, Alan Cumming and Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio (aka Bad Bunny).
Directed by Andrew Stanton, Toy Story 5 went on to become the highest-grossing film in the Toy Story franchise after the film earned a massive $159.6 million from 4,425 North American theaters in its opening weekend June 19-21. As of Sunday, the film has earned $480.2 million domestically and $664.2 million internationally for a worldwide box office tally of $1.144 billion, which is a box office record for the franchise. Toy Story 5 had a $250 million production budget before prints and advertising costs.
By contrast, Toy Story 4 is second-highest earning Toy Story movie with $1.071 billion worldwide, followed by Toy Story 3, which earned $1.068 billion globally. Toy Story 2 earned $511 million worldwide for the No. 4 spot on the list, while the original Toy Story earned the lowest amount with $375 million globally.
Currently, Toy Story 5 is the third-highest grossing movie worldwide in 2026, behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day at No. 1 with $2.479 billion and The Odyssey at No. 2 with $1.721 billion. Following Toy Story 5 at No. 4 is Michael with $1.021 billion worldwide, followed by The Super Mario Galaxy Movie with $1.012 billion.
‘Toy Story 5’ Arrives On Disney+ On Wednesday
Disney and Pixar recently announced that Toy Story 5 will make its streaming video on demand debut on Wednesday, Sept. 23
For viewers who don’t subscribe to the Disney streaming platform, it offers the ad-based Disney+ Basic tier for $11.99 per month with no yearly package option. The ad-free Disney+ Premium tier is available for $18.99 per month or $189.99 per year.
Disney+ also various bundling packages that include Hulu, ESPN and HBO Max.
Toy Story 5 was a big hit with Rotten Tomatoes’ critics and audiences. The film scored a 93% “fresh” critics’ score on RT based on 326 reviews, while audiences gave it a 94% “fresh” Popcornmeter score on the site based on 10,000-plus verified user ratings.
RT’s Critics Consensus for Toy Story 5 reads, “Proving that old toys can learn new tricks while reckoning with an era of endless screen time, Toy Story 5 largely sidesteps franchise fatigue by reaffirming that children everywhere still got a friend in these lovable characters.”
