AI as a means of coping with the coexistence of mindfulness and mindlessness.

In today’s column, I continue my ongoing series on the topic of AI and the important psychological role of mindfulness and mindlessness in the human mind. This latest focus is on using generative AI and large language models (LLMs) to assist in regulating the coexistence of mindfulness and mindlessness.
For those of you generally versed in the psychological considerations of mindfulness and mindlessness, you might be taken aback by the idea that there could be a coexistence between mindfulness and mindlessness. We conventionally consider that someone is either mindless or mindful, not both simultaneously. That is probably more surprising than the aspect of using AI as a cognitive-regulating mechanism or tool. I will walk you through the somewhat unorthodox viewpoint that the nature of mindfulness and mindlessness can be proposed as coexisting in our minds and then proceed to the AI aspects that serve as a helpful means of shaping where we cognitively land on those two notable fronts.

Intertwining AI And Psychology
As a quick background, I’ve been extensively covering and analyzing a myriad of psychological facets regarding the advent of modern-era AI that produces mental health advice and performs AI-driven therapy. This rising use of AI has principally been spurred by the evolving advances and widespread adoption of generative AI and LLMs such as ChatGPT, GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, Grok, and others. My efforts are intended to inform and engage in thoughtful dialogue on the pressing issues at hand. There are some that focus only on the upbeat side of AI and others that concentrate solely on the downbeat side of AI. It’s an all-or-nothing proposition, namely that AI is the best thing since sliced bread or the worst monstrosity ever devised. I don’t find those extreme views to provide clarity, nor do they offer a semblance of balance. Let’s be upfront and cover the ins and outs, which allow for cogent discussions and can aid policymakers, lawmakers, researchers, scholars, practitioners, and the like in discovering sensible and suitable paths forward. AI is not going away. AI is here to stay and will increasingly become ubiquitous.
AI And Mindfulness
I adopt the Langerian characterization of mindfulness, which is that a mindful perspective tends to avoid automatic behaviors and enlists a process of actively identifying new distinctions associated with the present situation (per my coverage at the link here).
In my prior posted analyses, see the link here, I showcased that generative AI can foster mindfulness in many vital ways, including:
- (1) Thinking anew: AI gets a person to reflect thoughtfully on the decisions they make and stirs them toward reviewing their personal preconceptions and staked-out viewpoints in new ways.
- (2) Metacognition-inspiring: AI can stimulate people to think in a big-picture way about how they think.
- (3) Multiple perspectives: People can interact with AI to become more aware of alternative perspectives that they otherwise had not envisioned, such as by invoking the use of AI personas.
- (4) Intellectual curiosity: AI can foster intellectual interests and spur a person toward enhanced intellectual curiosity and mental openness.
- (5) Attention stimulus: AI can get a person to escape from routine thinking and aid them in becoming more attentive to the world around them.
This suggests that a mentally uplifting cycle can ensue. A person may become increasingly mindful as they use AI to train their mind to be expansive. AI is serving as a psycho-educational mechanism that improves mental capacity. Furthermore, ongoing use of AI keeps them on their toes and mitigates potential backsliding into prior dour mental patterns.
A potential downside is that AI can become a dependency. Someone might only be achieving mindfulness by relying on AI as a crutch that continually nudges them toward mindfulness. The prudent and proper aim of employing AI would be to do so as a cognitive-building approach and explicitly steer clear of a persistent reliance on AI for this purpose.
AI And Mindlessness
Let’s look at the flip side of mindfulness and consider mindlessness. A casual glance at the world around us might suggest that people are commonly in the throes of mindlessness. It is a relatively inactive state of mind and easy to come by. You can sense that someone is acting mindlessly when they seem to be preoccupied with past mental distinctions, fail to see their environment in new ways, and appear to be proceeding in a highly regimented or routinized fashion.
Whereas we want AI to spur mindfulness, we would equally want AI to aid in reducing or mitigating mindlessness. The looming danger is that AI will promote mindlessness.
Mindlessness could regrettably be fueled by AI via these mechanisms:
- (1) Cognitive offloading: Why engage your own mind when you can lazily allow AI to look around and figure things out for you?
- (2) Reduced deliberation: No need to strain your mind to identify the pros and cons of something; just let AI do that hard deliberative work for you.
- (3) Intellectual passivity: AI gets things right most of the time, and thus there is little need to mentally challenge what AI advises.
- (4) Metacognitive atrophy: Lessening human decision-making is bound to undercut the mental capacity to think in a larger big-picture way.
- (5) And so on.
There is a societal concern that the pervasive use of AI is going to dull our minds. We are gradually outsourcing our thinking to AI. It might be an inch at a time. Perhaps, over a lengthy period of months or years, our mental capacity to think could be demonstrably undermined.
In any case, the upside to AI is that it can serve a helpful purpose by aiding people in escaping from mindlessness. A person who is in a mindless state of mind might be notified by AI that they have fallen into a mental rut. They could use that notification to shift into a mindful state. If they have trouble making that swing, AI can further assist in inspiring mindfulness.
The Duality Of Mindful And Mindless
Much of the exploration of mindfulness and mindlessness tends to depict those two states of mind as being essentially mutually exclusive to each other. You are either mindful or you are mindless. Period, end of story.
In that sense, the mind is dealing with a zero-sum game. You battle to keep mindlessness at bay. You fight dearly to keep mindfulness at the fore. This tug of war ends up with one winner and one loser. If possible, you want mindfulness to prevail over mindlessness. But that isn’t always the case, and it could be that mindlessness outdoes mindfulness.
What if the mind didn’t have to be reduced to only being capable of holding one of those two states at a time? Suppose we were to acknowledge that the mind can entail the coexistence of both mindfulness and mindlessness. Think of this as a vessel containing two different types of liquids which can slosh around and be moderated to contain more of one and less of the other.
Back-And-Forth Tension
Let’s unpack this alternative proposition of duality that avoids the mutual exclusivity limitations.
Consider that there is a person seated at their dinner table and quietly eating their meal. They eat the same meal each night. It is a meal cooked the same way, using the same ingredients, and otherwise the same dinner in nearly every respect. Meanwhile, while eating the meal, the person is also reading a newspaper and paying intense attention to the stories of the day. They are avidly thinking about how the news impacts them. What changes might they need to make in their life? Their mind is racing rapidly accordingly.
Is this person in a mindless state of mind or a mindful state of mind?
You might insist that they are mindless. Why so? Because they are eating the same dinner and not recognizing any newness, even if subtle, about what they are consuming. They didn’t discern that an extra pinch of salt had managed to get into the meal. The temperature of the dinner is slightly different from what it was the night before. And so on.
Whoa, comes the retort; the person is in a mindful state of mind. This is evident from the reading of the newspaper and their mental machinations associated with how the news will impact their existence. They are obviously thinking of new ways that they might adjust their life. This is the act of mindfulness taking place.
Coexistence Within The Mind
Another interpretation of this circumstance is that the person is doing both at the same time. They are mindful, and they are mindless. They aren’t solely in one state of mind. Both states of mind are taking place. It is a coexistence.
If you are willing to entertain that somewhat contrarian possibility, this opens the door to some interesting considerations. First, the mindfulness and the mindlessness can share the mind and do so without either one necessarily clobbering the other. We have the person performing the mindless task of eating their routine dinner. The person is also undertaking the mindful task of reading the newspaper and contemplating changes to their existence. A peaceful coexistence is at play.
It might be convenient to assign a percentage to the sharing of the mind by the two different mental states. Perhaps the mindless eating is only consuming a small fraction of the mind, let’s say 5%. The mindfulness is occupying the bulk of the mind, coming in at 95%. This is a fluid or dynamic allocation. From one moment to the next, those percentages are shifting.
Battles Can Ensue
Mindfulness and mindlessness are potentially in an eternal struggle to wrestle the mind in one direction over the other. While eating dinner, mindlessness begins to expand in the mind of the dining person. They put down the newspaper. Eventually, they are totally fixated on the dinner and chew their food without nary a new thought entering their head. Mindlessness has prevailed.
On the other hand, it could be that the person is swayed toward mindfulness. Here’s how that might go. The newspaper has gotten their mind into an active mode that is highly energizing. Dinner is now second fiddle. The person puts down their fork and stops eating. They want to devote their mind entirely to thinking about the exciting new possibilities spurred by what they read in the newspaper. Mindfulness has prevailed.
I would suggest that it is unlikely that the split is going to be 100%/0% or 0%/100% when it comes to the state of mind involved. Rarely would it seem that a person would exclusively be all mindful or exclusively all mindless. Maybe the percentages are, say, 1%/99% and 99%/1%, such that there is still an inkling of the other that is within the mind.
AI As The Aid To Regulation
A person who is principally in a mindful state would potentially detect and opt to overcome the mindless state if they believed that the state of mindlessness was detrimental or dissatisfying. For example, the person eating dinner starts to determine that they should not be mindlessly eating their food. It’s a great meal. Savor each bite. Snap out of the mindlessness involved. Mindfulness knocks down the percentage of mindlessness and becomes the momentary dominant condition.
Mindlessness is probably less likely to detect that mindfulness ought to be reduced. Instead, mindlessness might simply be a kind of vaporous element that generally seeks to expand. At all times, mindlessness is pushing us to gain further ground. If mindfulness is drifting, mindlessness takes advantage and moves in.
Whether you believe this duality model is theoretically sensible or perhaps construed as unsatisfactory, let’s at least examine how AI might enter the picture. AI could aid the regulation of the tension between mindfulness and mindlessness. I had previously considered how AI can spur mindfulness and mitigate mindlessness. Now, the aim is to have AI be a lighthouse, shining light on what the mental state is and giving preference to stirring mindfulness over mindlessness.
Aspects Of Using AI
Generative AI can be used to regulate the duality in these five crucial ways:
- (1) AI detection of mindlessness being underway.
- (2) AI notifies about mindlessness to increase cognitive awareness.
- (3) AI provides guidance on mindfulness monitoring mindlessness.
- (4) AI assists in spurring mindfulness to overtake mindlessness.
- (5) AI as a mental pattern identifier for mindfulness versus mindlessness propensities.
In my next posting, I will be exploring each of those five uses of AI. This is a practical consideration. You can readily use well-composed prompts to have generative AI undertake those activities, doing so in ChatGPT, GPT-5, Claude, Grok, Gemini, Copilot, etc. The goal will be to use an LLM as a means of ensuring that the mindful state of mind is not forsaken and that the mindless state of mind does not rule the roost.
A final thought for now. Ralph Waldo Emerson famously made this remark: “The mind, once stretched by a new idea, never returns to its original dimensions.” Rather than thinking of the mind as only occupied by mindful thoughts or only consumed with mindlessness, the duality possibility expands the viewpoint of finding ways to balance the two states in some harmonious way, based on the circumstances at hand. AI can help. Whether this is too much of a mental stretch is something you’ll need to decide.
