Topline

Meta’s stock is up over 5% on Wednesday as investors respond to Mark Zuckerberg’s latest attempt to turn the company’s substantial AI investment into a consumer business, with its new Muse agent able to send emails, book travel and make purchases.

Key Facts

Meta shares opened up over 5% on Wednesday, trading at $646.65, up 5.41%, at 10:15 a.m. EDT after Meta on Tuesday unveiled Muse, a personal AI agent that the company says “doesn’t just answer questions, it actually does the work,” like booking travel, sending emails and buying something, with the ability to take on “big audacious goals.”

Zuckerberg has previously told investors that one reason why Meta is investing so heavily in data centers and infrastructure is because supercharged digital assistants are AI models’ next step and will be the company’s “next wave of products and revenue lines in the months and years ahead.”

Meta delayed Muse’s launch in April over safety and reliability concerns, after internal testing uncovered problems like sensitive-data exposure and inconsistent performance.

Muse will initially only be available in the U.S., through a dedicated app or Meta’s WhatsApp service, and the company plans to add the personal agent to its smart glasses soon, according to Tuesday afternoon’s announcement.

Meta plans to offer Muse as a free product, along with $20 and $100 monthly subscriptions for heavier usage.

Zuckerberg on Tuesday night also said Threads has reached 500 million monthly active users, which he said puts it on par with or bigger than Elon Musk’s X, giving investors another reason to view Meta’s newer products as lucrative.

KEY BACKGROUND

The launch comes after Meta agreed late last month to pay up to $18 billion in a settlement with a group of state attorneys general that alleged the company misrepresented the level of harm apps like Facebook and Instagram cause. The company is still entangled in other personal injury and school district lawsuits over similar allegations. Meta is also navigating concerns over the safety of Muse, which comes as the company’s major technical and security incidents jumped 40% from last year over agent-related issues and an AI-driven coding surge.

BIG NUMBER

Up to $145 billion. This is how much Meta expects to spend on capital expenditures for AI infrastructure in 2026.
