WWE SummerSlam 2026 Results For Gunther Vs. Nick Aldis

At WWE SummerSlam, Gunther ensured that Nick Aldis’ return to the ring was cut short.

After a very entertaining back-and-forth battle, “The Ring General” defeated his longtime nemesis inside U.S. Bank Stadium by forcing him to tap out to a sleeper hold, ending Aldis’ brief return to the ring.

Here are the key highlights and moments from Gunther’s victory over the SmackDown General Manager:

• Gunther and Aldis locked up, and “The Ring General” immediately looked to outwrestle the former SmackDown GM. As Aldis looked to gain momentum, Gunther rolled out of the ring and taunted Aldis. Back inside, Gunther blasted Aldis with a vicious chop, but Aldis responded with some strikes of his own.
• Aldis caught a leaping Gunther and picked him up for an impressive stalling DDT that popped the crowd. Aldis failed to lock in a Cloverleaf, and Gunther blasted him with another big chop that sent him crashing from the top rope. Gunther taunted Aldis’ wife, Mickie James, at ringside.
• Back in, Aldis tried the Cloverleaf again, but Gunther blocked it and chopped him down. Aldis eventually ducked a chop attempt, but Gunther whipped him into the turnbuckle back-first multiple times. Aldis reversed an Irish whip and then hit a backbreaker. He went for the Cloverlead again, but Gunther avoided it and caught him in a sleeper hold.
• Aldis got out of it by sending Gunther head-first into the turnbuckle. Gunther climbed to the top rope, and Aldis hit a superplex to lefel the playing field. “You still got it” chants from the Minneapolis crowd as Aldis fought back. Eventually, Aldis hit a running clothesline.
• Gunther hit one of his own, but Aldis responded with another clothesline. Aldis hit a running power slam for two. Aldis leaped off the top and missed, but Gunther missed a boot. Aldis hit a boot and a body slam, then went up top. Aldis leaped off with an elbow drop and went up top for another one. He hit it on Gunther’s back, and then attempted a Cloverleaf again. He locked it in as Gunther crawled to the ropes.
• Aldis pulled him away from the ropes as the crowd erupted, but he was able to get to the rope after a long struggle. More “You still got it!” chants. Gunther sent Aldis face first into the turnbuckle, but Gunther got a sleeper hold locked in. Aldis locked in one of his own, but Gunther escaped and hit a big powerbomb for a close two-count.
• Gunther locked in the sleeper hold on Aldis, who fought back to his feet. But Gunther dropped back down to the mat, forcing Aldis to tap out for the victory.

WWE SummerSlam 2026 Results: What’s Next For Gunther And Nick Aldis?

Aldis’ WWE SummerSlam match is reportedly a “one off,” despite a strong showing for the former TNA Champion.

While Aldis is an accomplished pro wrestler in his own right, keeping him as SmackDown’s General Manager, and out of the ring, is undoubtedly the right call. One could argue, after all, that Aldis is perhaps the best on-screen authority figure WWE has had this millennium, as he has brought an air of authenticity to the role that numerous previous GMs couldn’t.

Though Aldis could potentially be a main event caliber star in WWE, he’s done so well in his current role that he should continue in it moving forward. Aldis got his dream match at SummerSlam, and he lost. He doesn’t need to wrestle again anytime soon and risk blurring the lines between wrestler and authority figure so much that it dilutes the latter.

Just as Aldis moves on, so too should Gunther.

After Gunther retired the likes of Goldberg, Styles and Cena over the past year, WWe’s follow-up to those monumental wins has been, well, meh. Both critics and major WWE stars like AJ Styles have criticized WWE’s handling of Gunther’s on-screen character following his massive trio of victories, and they’re right to feel that way.

Although Gunther soundly defeated Aldis at WWE SummerSlam with a submission win, the creative team sort of backed itself into a corner when Gunther became the “Career Killer.” Now, virtually anything he does short of a dominant world title reign or retiring another legend feels like a huge letdown.

At SummerSlam, WWE took a step in the right direction by seemingly ending Gunther’s feud with Aldis. Now, the key is to elevate Gunther back into world title contention.
