An eight-year MLB veteran’s time with the New York Yankees might have been brief, but it gave the veteran infielder the highlight of his career.
Earlier this month, long-time big league infielder Jon Berti announced on social media that he was ending his professional baseball career after more than 15 years in the game.
“After a lot of thought and consideration, I have decided to retire from professional baseball,” Berti wrote on Instagram. “It’s been a hell of a journey, full of ups and downs. I’m very grateful for all the opportunities and lessons that baseball has given me over the last 15+ years.”
For Berti, one of the most memorable stops came during his lone season in the Bronx. Although injuries limited his opportunities, he became part of a Yankees team that reached the World Series in 2024, giving the versatile infielder a fitting highlight near the end of his career.
Former New York Yankees Infielder Played Key Role In World Series Run
The Yankees acquired Berti from the Miami Marlins just before Opening Day in 2024, bringing in a player whose ability to play multiple positions had made him valuable throughout his career.
His defensive flexibility immediately proved useful, though Berti’s Yankees tenure was interrupted by a left calf strain that cost him significant time.
“That versatility and steady output prompted the Yankees to trade for Berti just prior to the season opener in 2024,” Steve Adams recalled for MLB Trade Rumors. “He posted a decent .273/.342/.318 batting line when on the field but only managed to get into 25 games (74 plate appearances).”
Berti finished his Yankees stint with one home run, six RBIs and five stolen bases. His ability to move around the diamond also led to an unusual postseason moment.
During the American League Division Series against the Kansas City Royals, Berti made his first career start at first base. It was an especially notable example of the defensive flexibility that had defined his value as a major leaguer.
The Yankees ultimately non-tendered Berti in November of that year and he ended his career after signing with the Chicago Cubs.

Despite spending relatively little time in New York, Berti was able to experience something many players never do: playing for the Yankees on baseball’s biggest stage.
Asked about the defining memory of his career, Berti pointed directly to that experience,.
“Coolest memory would be, probably, being part of a World Series team, right?” Berti said during a recent appearance on Foul Territory. “Being a Yankee, going to a World Series.”
That sentiment offers an appropriate bookend to a career built more on versatility and persistence than individual accolades. Berti reached the majors with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2018 and eventually became a dependable utility player with the Marlins before his unexpected opportunity in New York.
His Yankees chapter lasted only one season, and injuries prevented him from making a major statistical impact. But the opportunity still delivered the memory he ultimately valued most.
