Angel Studios and Wonder Project’s Young Washington, a biopic about the formative years of President George Washington, arrives on streaming this week after a solid run at the box office and news that the story will continue.

Young Washington stars William Franklyn-Miller as Washington, which examines how a single misstep thrusts the future first president into the middle of a global conflict. Directed by Jon Erwin (House of David), the cast of Young Washington also features Kelsey Grammer as Lord Fairfax, Ben Kingsley as Robert Dinwiddie, Andy Serkis as General Braddock and Mary-Louise Parker as George Washington’s mother, Mary Washington.

Rated PG-13, Young Washington has earned $46.8 million in domestic ticket sales to date, but has had little exposure internationally, earning about $15,300. Young Washington had a production budget of $20 million before marketing costs, according to box office tracker The Numbers.

Young Washington earned $19.3 million in its opening weekend July 3-5, marking the second-highest opening for faith-based Angel Studios behind the $19.6 million Sound of Freedom made in 2023.

While Rotten Tomatoes critics were mixed in their reviews of Young Washington, with a 59% “rotten” score, RT’s audience score reflected a different sentiment about the biopic as it earned a 92% “fresh” Popcornmeter score based on 1,000-plus verified user ratings.

Given audiences’ enthusiasm for the film, Erwin did not waste any time revealing his next steps for the story of Washington.

“Right now, all over the nation, they love it. They cheer,” Erwin said in a July 4 Instagram video post. “We’ve shown it all over, and the question that keeps coming up: ‘Are you going to make another movie? Is there a follow-up to George Washington?’ So, we’re here at Mount Vernon, there is a museum dedicated to him, so I thought, ‘Well, there’s no better place in the world to answer that question than right here.

“The answer is ‘Yes, we are working on another one right now. We’ve begun writing another Revolutionary War epic on 1776,” Erwin added. “And you think Washington’s big, wait for 1776. It’s epic in every way. It’s another incredible chapter in man’s life and legacy.”
