FC Barcelona target Julian Alvarez confirmed to ESPN how he’s told Atletico Madrid that he wants to leave them, and complete his “dream move” which is believed to be a transfer to the Catalans.
“The truth is that I don’t know,” Alvarez first said about his future, when interviewed following Argentina’s World Cup victory Austria.
“I don’t think it’s the time to talk, but I can’t hide either. I try to be an honest person. I spoke to the people at the club, who I had to talk to. I think the best thing for everyone is a transfer and I want to fulfill my dream,” Alvarez added.
Alvarez is Barcelona’s top target
Alvarez spoke after coming off the bench in Argentina’s 2-0 World Cup 2026 group stage win over Austria.
FC Barcelona icon Lionel Messi scored two more goals for the defending champions, increasing his tournament tally to five. Alvarez is known to be a fan of the Blaugrana, who wants to emulate his idol at the Spotify Camp Nou.
Alvarez reportedly agreed to join Barcelona on a five-year deal according to reports in Argentina a few weeks ago. Yet it is believed that Joan Laporta and Co. will have to up a $100 million deal for him.
They haven’t been helped by bitter rival Real Madrid, in their endeavor to land Alvarez.
After being re-elected, Real Madrid President Florentino Perez kept his campaign trail promise to members by launching a club record $175 million bid rejected by Atletico Madrid.
Yet Barcelona will be impressed by Alvarez publicly coming out and communicating that he wants to leave. That’s a big step in forcing a move to Catalonia, and could force Atleti’s hand into accepting a bid.
According to MARCA’s transfer market expert Matteo Morreto, a package around the $140 million mark could tempt Atleti into selling a player that clearly doesn’t want to be in Diego Simeone’s squad anymore.
Alvarez has eyes for Barcelona, amid interest from other European heavyweights such as Premier League rulers Arsenal and the outfit that beat them in the Champions League final recently, Paris Saint-Germain.
