Key Facts
The shooting took place in the Bronx neighborhood of Marble Hill at around 4 p.m. ET, and the injured man was taken to a nearby hospital and remained conscious, the New York Police Department said.
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani called the shooting “unconscionable” and said he had reports that ICE agents surrounded the man and “a 5-year-old child in his car before firing multiple rounds.”
Mamdani said the child is physically unharmed and noted that he will speak with Trump and demand that he “ends all ICE enforcement actions in our city.”
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul also expressed anger over the incident and said that with a five-year-old child inside the car, the incident could have “ended in tragedy.”
Hochul also said she spoke with Trump and DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin to express “outrage on behalf of New Yorkers” and urge them to halt all ICE enforcement operations in New York.
What Has DHS Said About The Shooting?
In a lengthy statement issued on X, the Department of Homeland Security claimed ICE officers were conducting a “targeted enforcement operation” in the Bronx to arrest an immigrant from the Dominican Republic with a prior criminal conviction and multiple arrests. The statement claimed the Dominican man had associations with the “Trinitarios gang.” The statement said the man was injured after an “ICE officer discharged his weapon,” after which he was “immediately rendered aid.” The statement made no mention of a five-year-old child in the man’s car, but said the incident is being investigated and both the FBI and Homeland Security Investigations are at the scene.
