I have just finished watching Josh Hartnett take on a giant sea monster in Below, a halfway decent miniseries with halfway decent reviews. But moving on, there is another show new to Netflix’s top 10 list this week that is worth checking out due to its very high Rotten Tomatoes audience score.
That is season 2 of Haunted Hotel, the animated series produced by Netflix Animation Studios. It was created by Matt Roller, who previously wrote for series like Krapopolis, Archer and Community. Now, his own project has a 95% Rotten Tomatoes audience review score, spanning two seasons of the series. Here’s the synopsis:
“A single mother of two struggles to run a haunted hotel with the help of her estranged brother, who is now one of the ghosts haunting the hotel and thinks the other ghosts have some pretty good ideas.”
The show has a great cast that includes Will Forte, Eliza Coupe, Jimmi Simpson, and Skyler Gisondo, who was recently seen in Primetime opposite Robert Pattinson, a role that could result in an Oscar nomination for the young actor. After starring as Jimmy Olsen in Superman, he also now has his own DCU show, The People v. Gorilla Grodd, filming now.
Haunted Hotel doesn’t have quite as high a score from critics, who give it 79%, though that’s for the show overall, and there aren’t enough reviews in yet for a season 2 score. The four that have arrived, however, are all positive. Here’s a sampling:
Mama’s Geeky – “Does a brilliant job of adding more lore without taking away from what season one gave fans. Another funny, entertaining, and (just a little) scary season.”
Collider – “With brilliant jokes, inventive scares, and a few moments that really sting, Haunted Hotel makes a second stay at the Undervale well worth it.”
We’re Watching What? – “Season two continues the humorous and still earnestly emotional trajectory of season one with the same signature charm and chaos.”
Haunted Hotel’s 95% audience score matched the 95% critic score of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, with that show bringing up the rear of the Top 10 list. Haunted Hotel has the highest audience score of anything on the list right now, so even if you have some biases toward animation, it seems worth it to give it a chance. Haunted Hotel has not gotten renewed for season 3 yet, but arriving at No. 5 right now isn’t a bad start for what’s a relatively low-profile outing. It’s actually the third-place scripted series on the list behind Below and East of Eden. Solid.
