The Boston Red Sox have plenty to address after another short postseason appearance exposed some of the roster’s biggest shortcomings. Boston returned to the playoffs for a second straight year after a remarkable turnaround in the standings, but another Wild Card sweep at the hands of the New York Yankees left the organization facing an offseason filled with questions about its pitching, offense and overall roster construction.
“The 2026 Red Sox were a roller-coaster ride — with Boston reviving its season with a 32-5 surge in the summer and ultimately punching a ticket back to the postseason for the second year in a row,” Conor Ryan wrote for Boston.com. “But that optimism waned as the temperatures started to dip this fall, culminating in an embarrassing two-game sweep at the hands of the Yankees in the Wild Card round.”
And on Monday, the Red Sox got saw their first official organizational change since their season ended.
Boston Red Sox’s Veteran Arm Leaves Team After Very Short Stint
On Monday, right-hander Seth Martinez elected free agency, according to the official transaction log.
Martinez’s departure closes an uneventful chapter in Boston. The 32-year-old signed a minor league deal with the Red Sox in January and spent most of the season at Triple-A Worcester before receiving a very brief major league opportunity in August.
Martinez appeared in one game for Boston, allowing one run in one inning. He was designated for assignment on August 12 and outrighted to Worcester two days later.
But his larger body of work provides a better indication of why Boston was optimistic that he might have contributed more to the big-league club.
“The 31-year-old Martinez has tossed 145 innings over parts of six big league seasons,” AJ Eustace noted for MLB Trade Rumors. “Most of those came with the (Houston) Astros from 2021-24. In that time, he posted a 3.93 ERA in 137 1/3 innings out of the bullpen.”
Boston Red Sox Face Bigger Questions After Veteran Pitcher Leaves Organization
Martinez’s exit is unlikely to be the defining pitching decision of Boston’s offseason, but it is another reminder of how much roster turnover could be coming.
The Red Sox have significant questions surrounding the rotation and bullpen after a season that ended with their pitching staff unable to keep pace with the Yankees in October. Ryan suggested that adding another proven starter should be one of the club’s priorities, particularly with Sonny Gray’s future uncertain.
For Martinez, meanwhile, free agency offers another opportunity after a turbulent few years that included stints with Houston, Miami and Boston. His departure may be a minor move in the larger Red Sox offseason, but it officially begins another search for the next version of a pitching staff that Boston hopes can last longer than two postseason games in 2027.
