Ironically, CLUES was quite a good guess, leaving me with only 8 possible solutions and giving me two green boxes and a yellow. I still went for mostly new letters with my second guess, SPRIG, and that left me with two possible choices, though I could only think of one: SLUSH. Lucky for me it wasn’t SLUNK!

It’s the first of the month so we start with a clean slate. The Wordle Bot and I tied with 21 points this July, which is like five thousand times the score of your average soccer game. Very exciting stuff. Today we tie again, starting out August with 1 point for me and 1 point for the Bot since we each guessed in three, and 0 for tying.

How To Play Competitive Wordle
- Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
- If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
- Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
- You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!
Today’s Wordle Etymology
“Slush” is probably of Scandinavian origin, related to Norwegian dialect slusk and similar words meaning “mud, slop, or melted snow.” It entered English in the 17th century to describe partially melted snow or watery, muddy mixtures, and later developed figurative senses such as “slush fund” and “slush pile.”
