Daveigh Chase, who voiced Lilo in the animated movie version of Lilo & Stitch and played the evil spirit Samara in the American version of the horror thriller The Ring, has died.
Chase’s boyfriend, Roy Hernandez, told TMZ that the actress was suffering from meningitis, which led to sepsis. She was 35.
According to TMZ, Chase was hospitalized in Los Angeles in early June because of malnutrition. No other details about Chase’s death are available at this time.
Born Daveigh Elizabeth Chase-Schwallier on July 24, 1990, in Las Vegas, Chase made her screen debut in a bit part in the series Sabrina the Teenage Witch in 1997. A year later, she played the 8-year-old version of famed actor-director Michael Landon’s daughter, Shawna Landon, in the TV movie Michael Landon, The Father I Knew.
From 1999 to 2000, Chase appeared in guest roles on such hit shows as Charmed, The Practice and ER, and landed the role of Samatha Darko, the sister of Jake Gyllenhaal’s title character in the acclaimed psychological thriller Donnie Darko. Chase reprised the role in the 2009 sequel S. Darko.
After appearing in a string of TV guest roles in 2001, Chase landed the title role of Lilo in the 2002 Disney animated classic Lilo & Stitch, and went on to reprise the voice role in 2003’s video sequel Stitch! The Movie. Chase also voiced Lilo in the video movie Leroy & Stitch in 2006, and voiced the character in Lilo & Stitch: The Series from 2003 to 2006.
In 2002, Chase landed the role of Samara Morgan — the terrifying specter who first emerges from a well onscreen before she crawls out of television screen in director Gore Verbinski’s horror thriller The Ring. A Hollywood remake of the classic 1998 Japanese horror thriller Ringu.
