I hope you all had a fantastic Labor Day. The week begins in earnest now, as we barrel toward fall. It feels very summery out still, which is nice. I’m not ready for it to end. The autumnal equinox is just a couple weeks away! Ah well. Let’s solve this Wordle!

Today’s Wordle Etymology
“Liven” comes from live + the verb-forming suffix -en, literally meaning “to make alive.” It appeared in English in the 17th century and developed the sense “to make more lively, cheerful, or interesting,” especially in the phrase liven up.

SPIRE wasn’t a bad opener, leaving me with two yellow boxes and 74 possible solutions. I got lucky with DEVIL, however, thanks to that “V” though the Wordle Bot likewise got lucky with RIVEN — what a pair of words, DEVIL and RIVEN! — and we both snagged LIVEN on three.

The bot and I each get a point for guessing in three and nothing for tying. Our September totals move up a smidge:

Today’s Bonus Custom Wordle

How To Play Competitive Wordle
- Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
- If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
- Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
- You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!
