Five of the original six Avengers are accounted for in Avengers: Doomsday, but the missing one confirms he was not called at all.
Marvel
There has been much debate about who was and who was not included in the cast list for Avengers: Doomsday, with some of Marvel’s biggest heroes missing in action. Now, we are starting to see more cast members revealed, like (spoilers) Bruce Banner being “collected” by Doctor Doom, implying he will be forcibly used as a soldier for the supervillain. That’s one conspicuously missing core Avenger down, but now the final one has chimed in about their absence from Doomsday.
That is Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye, part of the original group of Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk and Black Widow. Black Widow is dead, and now Yelena is being referred to as Black Widow outright. But there have been no hints at all about Hawkeye’s return, and Renner is now saying directly that he’s not in it in a recent Q and A:
“No, no, no, no. Not in that one. Doomsday I’m not in, so The Avengers will probably lose, just so you know… they didn’t call me, so it’s their fault they’re going to lose.”
Renner previously addressed an issue he had with Marvel about how they were offering to pay him far less to return for Hawkeye season 2 compared to season 1, which also starred Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop, who has been missing from the MCU short of a single post-credits scene. Sure, it’s possible Renner isn’t telling the truth, as some superhero actors have done in the past to hide upcoming roles. Hailee Steinfeld herself has been asked about Doomsday and Secret Wars and has had an impossible time keeping a straight face, so the implication is that she will show up in one or both. And if she does, Renner might. He does say “that one,” so it could imply he’s in Secret Wars. He was not in Infinity War, for example, but did show up in Endgame.
Hawkeye joins a rather long list of key characters that are missing from Doomsday, which include Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, Doctor Strange, Scarlet Witch and Spider-Man. There are theories that Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch may be in the film, hidden under masks as Doom’s magic-wielding allies. A post-credits Brand New Day scene that shows Spidey tracked in space could mean he shows up as well. It would be a little strange for Marvel to leave out such key heroes, though again, some of these may show up in Secret Wars, but not Doomsday. Spidey ally Jean Grey is in Secret Wars for sure, so maybe he’ll show up as her ally there.
I have a hunch that a “ready to return” Renner is not being left out of both films, even if he doesn’t appear in Doomsday. It’s close to a guarantee Kate Bishop is in these films in some capacity, and I would imagine the same is true of him as well. And when he says “they’re going to lose,” that does fit in with certain Empire Strikes Back expectations of the film we’ve heard already.
