The Chicago Cubs are embroiled in a midseason slump, recently returning to a .500 record for the first time since April as they navigate pitcher injuries and quiet bats.
But fans of the team received a new reason to cheer for a former contributor, as an infielder from the 2023 club made an inspiring return to the major leagues after a cancer diagnosis nearly pushed him to retirement.
“For the first time in three years, Trey Mancini is in the big leagues,” MLB Trade Rumors’ Anthony Franco reported. “The Angels selected the veteran first baseman onto the MLB roster before tonight’s series opener with the (Houston) Astros. Mancini is starting at first base and batting seventh against his old team, who are sending Spencer Arrighetti to the mound.”
Mancini, who enjoyed his best seasons with the Baltimore Orioles and won a World Series championship with the Astros in 2022, last played for the Cubs before he was released late in the season and then navigated several minor league contracts.
Chicago Cubs Former Infielder Returns To MLB After Retirement Decision
Shortly after his return to the big leagues, the infielder revealed that he had made a decision to retire from the sport shortly before the Angels hitting coach gave him a call.
“I thought I was retired for good,” Mancini said during a recent appearance on Foul Territory. “I was getting ready to announce it.”
That revelation adds another layer to one of baseball’s most inspiring comeback stories. Mancini also faced a difficult health scare in the midst of his big-league career.
“The demand for first basemen in their mid-30s isn’t terribly great,” Ken Rosenthal noted for The Athletic after Mancini’s return. “He also had the perspective of a cancer survivor. Mancini missed the shortened 2020 season after undergoing Stage 3 colon cancer surgery.”
Incredibly, Mancini enjoyed three hits in his first game with the Angels this week. The last time he had that many hits in a game came with the Cubs in July 2023.

What happens next for Mancini remains uncertain.
The Angels may view him as a short-term solution, but after battling cancer, enduring years away from the majors and nearly announcing his retirement, simply returning to a big-league lineup represents a significant achievement.
For a player who thought his career was over, the opportunity to step onto a major-league field again is a reminder that baseball careers do not always end when expected.
